Harnessing Construction Expertise for Growth

Technology doesn’t provide expertise, but it can help you capture and share it

Technology can help your company move ahead, but it’s ultimately your people and their expertise that differentiate you and unlock growth for your business. That expertise is gained from years of study and professional experience, and it resides within each individual, making it challenging to scale across the broader organization. Matt Warren shares an initiative at LendLease focused on capturing, amplifying, and sharing that expertise. It starts with increasing data intake and regular review—not just of BIM data but all kinds of project data. From there, they look to experts to analyze and assess patterns, identify possible outcomes, and make the kinds of complex decisions and judgements that only people can make. Then they capture that decision making and connect it to various factors, so that when other teams encounter similar factors and patterns related to materials, processes, and personnel, they can consider applying a similar decision. When it comes to complex issues like safety, feasibility, quality, and sustainability, there’s no replacement for this kind of expertise. A company like LendLease has thousands of projects in the pipeline, and the same expert can’t evaluate them all. While technology will never provide expertise, it can be a tool to amplify, disseminate, and share expertise across large organizations, enabling us to solve our most complex problems at scale.
