How Developers Can Drive Your Digital Transformation
Lessons from a company that has been developing innovative applications in house for decades
SYSTRA SA has long been a global leader in transportation engineering. They have also been a leader in digital transformation for decades, developing a series of in-house applications that have enabled them to take advantage of the latest advances in digital technologies to improve outcomes. That started with iSYSTRA in the 1990s, a quality assurance application based on AutoCAD, and continued with BIMinOneClick, an internal production tool in the 2000s. With the introduction of Forge in 2016, they needed to their development skills to a new level and found that many of the young engineers they’d hired for their BIM skills already had done some programming in school and were eager to learn more. This resulted in the development of eLODy, a quality checking solution for BIM models that handled nearly 4000 models involved in two major projects in Paris, saving the equivalent of two years of manual BIM management time. When sustainability became a top priority following COP 21, they developed CarbonTracker, a tool that enables designers and engineers to calculate carbon impact in the design phase. Vladana Darras, head of digital engineering and information management, shares her tips for internal development, which includes building teams with diverse backgrounds and choosing the right use case to build team confidence.
