Radical Approaches to Fostering Team Culture
Tips for creating a cohesive, collaborative team in the hybrid work environment
In the wake of the disruption caused by the pandemic, many professionals are struggling to find the right team, the right flow, and a company culture where they feel a sense of belonging. Architects FORA is a women-owned, women-led architecture firm focused on creating resilient and equitable housing. As architect and technology lead Victoria Via explains, they are embracing a range of “radical” approaches to improve cohesion and support both individual and team growth. First, they embrace non-billable time, meaning that each team member is expected to spend time each week developing expertise on a specific area that will support the broader team. While investing in non-billable time may seem antithetical to profitability, it has resulted in accelerated approvals and optimized processes that ultimately drive better bottom-line results. Second, they’ve aimed for an environment that is collaborative rather than competitive. To do this, they use a range of digital collaboration tools, support rapid iteration through collective review, and they partner with other design firms to share resources and best practices. Finally, they support equity and diversity through flat, transparent salaries and work-from-anywhere policies. These approaches are driving success for FORA. Via urges all companies to consider what “radical” approaches you can put into place to help your company advance in today’s new normal.
