This is our introduction class for the finite element analysis (FEA) with Autodesk Nastran Power Track. In this session we will introduce the Autodesk Nastran Power Track speakers and all the classes included in this power track. This class will cover the basics of FEA and explore examples (including linear stress, modal-to-heat transfer, and dynamic simulations) in order to gain additional insight and improve product design for automotive, oil and gas, and industrial machinery industries.

With its outstanding modeling tool set and its ability to process NURBS geometry, Autodesk Maya software is well suited for the use in concept modeling in the automotive industry. This class demonstrates the typical use of Maya in automotive concept modeling and shows how Maya is positioned in various design pipelines. We will demonstrate the advantages and limitations of the smooth-polygon workflow.

In this round-table discussion we will briefly give an overview of the Autodesk, Inc., engagement in the various industry consortia and the existing interfaces for the process plant industry and the oil and gas industry. We would like to learn which interfaces and data formats you're using when you exchange PIDs, line lists, bills of materials, 3D piping, steel, and equipment models with all the associated data. Which interface are you using to receive data from FEED (front end engineering design) and to hand over to stress calculation, project management, and procurement system? Which standards are useful, which have obstacles? What can Autodesk and other software vendors do to enable a better collaboration? Which industry activities and standards should we support? Commercially available simulation software was used to study the effect of processing conditions on the structural performance of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene. Processing conditions such as gate locations were used to evaluate the subsequent change in glass fiber orientation and its effect on structural performance of a demonstrative part. Results show that processing conditions play a critical role in the success of a structural composite and must be considered foremost in the design process.

Starting with 2D, the class will demonstrate the interface simplicity and natural workflow that is evident in SketchBook Pro. It will highlight the quality of the line weight and natural feel of the tools. Continuing to 3D, the class will touch on the translation of a sketch into Alias StudioTools and the use of quick visualization tools in Alias to output an image for retouching in SketchBook Pro. This case study will take attendees through the initial ideation phase of a design from rough sketch to a tighter presentable rendition. The workflow between SketchBook Pro and Alias will be highlighted. All data will be available for download.

In this class, we provide a broad overview of the newly released composites software functionality. We focus on Autodesk® Simulation Composite Design software for designing composite structures and on Autodesk® Simulation Composite Analysis software for stress and failure analysis of composite structures. We provide an overview of the capabilities of the software, present case studies, and discuss target markets. We also cover the future direction of the Simulation Composites product line.

Additionally, you will be introduced to the inputs required and the outputs produced so more-exacting and more-precise engineering decisions can be made.

I have found that many of these techniques are new to, or overlooked by, seasoned professionals and are certainly useful to new users as well. These methods of working can speed up your use of nearly every command within Alias software. This class applies to all surface work, from concept through production class “A” for any design, whether it’s product development or automotive.

This interactive class will demonstrate the importance of the discovery process at the beginning of any visualization or video project. After an introduction to the key elements of the discovery phase, the class attendees will collaborate to develop a set of questions to ask during discovery that will achieve the best results and reveal the single most important message to tell. Working in small groups, the class will then compete with each other to find the most compelling story in several scenarios based on typical client requests.

In this class, experienced Alias industrial design software users, concept artists, illustrators, and designers learn the powerful Alias techniques used to create an art book of fantasy vehicles, airplanes, bikes, spaceships, and mysterious expeditions. Power Alias user Michal Jelinek shares his story about how he created the art for the book. He explains how the creative modeling process differs in entertainment versus product design. He also discusses how to capitalize on polygonal modeling expertise in Alias, as well as how to use the Alias dynamic shape modeling tools and hybrid modeling capability. Finally, he shows how to prepare Alias concept models for rapid prototyping.

This class covers the concept and creation of a new series of semisubmersible and one-atmosphere watercraft that make the underwater world more accessible. Design work was done in Autodesk Alias and carried through to the production of four vehicles. In this hands-on lab, learn how Inventor® Professional, Autodesk® Simulation CFD, and Autodesk® Simulation Mechanical design tools can empower structural engineers and architects to accurately assess designs for the infrastructure of our growing world. Autodesk design and creation suites are a smorgasbord of design tools, many with unlimited cloud computing capabilities. Creatively exploring various combinations and interoperability functions of Autodesk Simulation tools in nontraditional workflows can have a profound effect on design. This lab provides an opportunity to practice the workflow and techniques in a hands-on environment. A case study shows the techniques that are needed then justifies using simulation tools and workflows to accurately predict the thermal profile and resultant stresses through validation against measured bridge data. Attendees learn how Inventor designs can be analyzed for thermal loads using Simulation CFD and for thermal stresses using Simulation Mechanical.

During this class, you will learn the how Autodesk Simulation Mechanical software can be used for construction industry applications. Autodesk Simulation Mechanical will be used to create a global model with fine local details, such as a bolted connection in a steel structure. We will also cover critical effects such as prestress of bolts, contact between parts, plastic deformation, and dynamic behavior that captures real behavior.

This class will walk though techniques for preparing geometry for simulation. We'll cover hints that will help you to identify potentially problematic areas, and then we'll show you how to quickly repair models, remove unneeded detail, and optimize the geometry in a way that will help you to create a high-quality finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh.
