Industrialized construction: The application of manufacturing techniques in the built environment. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is under pressure to change—to become more productive and less dangerous, and provide increasing levels of certainty. The industry is set to shift a significant part of the value chain to prefabrication, and Autodesk is committed to supporting its customers on their journeys. In this session, you'll hear from Autodesk's industrialized construction head of strategy and evangelism, Amy Marks, on how Autodesk is approaching industrialized construction and the company’s strategies for product, services, and evangelism.

In recent years, industrialized construction has become a hot topic. The term “design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA)” is used in many conversations when discussing industrialized construction. We will discuss how DfMA pertains to industrialized construction, what DfMA is, and what DfMA is not.

Industrialized construction is growing rapidly in North America and globally. This session will survey current best-practices related to successful business models in offsite/industrialized construction and prefabrication including an innovative example from Ladacube, where we are seeing adoption, and digital tools that can support growth. Finally, this session will synthesize what we've learned to-date to highlight promising forward-looking practices and technologies which will enable additional growth of IC/offsite construction going forward.

The recent joint Autodesk/RICS paper “Future of Work in Construction” calls on industry, government, and academia to join forces to help ensure the adoption of industrialized construction (IC) for transformational change in our industry. Each stakeholder—academia, the private sector, and the government—has a part to play in this shift of thinking, behaviors, and processes in order to facilitate change. The future of the industry is highly dependent on the competence of graduates entering the workforce. In the face of troubling skilled-labor shortages, new employees must enter the industry with the abilities and exposure to technologies to drive digital construction, the IC processes, and higher levels of precision in construction. In this panel discussion, we will highlight the current status and develop a road map aimed at helping stakeholders work together to enable graduates who have knowledge of the required interdisciplinary skills embrace IC fully.

Industrialized construction is becoming a household name within the building industry due to its advantages in improving productivity, quality, accuracy, and efficiency. Applying innovative BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows and using advanced technologies through all stages from design to production has been one of Nordic Office of Architecture’s most important strategies for success in industrialized construction. In this class, you will gain insight into the Scandinavian way of industrialized construction, and see how a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the software development team of Project Frog has enabled new possibilities to aid in design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and BIM workflows. We will showcase both a large-scale hospital and a smaller-scale set of high-end prefabricated housing. This collaboration reflects on the challenges that architects and engineers have faced in the presence of repeating information, and provides a step-by-step workflow for similar projects (hotels, schools, office buildings, and so on).

Join our talk for a glimpse at the near-future of industrialized construction—the ultimate marriage of the Autodesk Forge APIs, manufacturing, building information modeling (BIM), and construction. Despite its promises of improvement, off-site construction has continually struggled to achieve the significant momentum it requires in order to become self-sustaining. What's missing? At KOPE we've cracked one of the thorniest aspects in industrialized construction (IC)—supply chain transparency. Supplier secrecy is both a bug and a feature of the construction world. Through our off-site market, we've been building a free forum to democratize, open up, and interconnect the world of suppliers, projects, builders, and consultants. At KOPE, we're using Autodesk Forge technology to build the online platform for the coming world of off-site construction. We look forward to showing you what that looks like.

This panel will invite leaders from globally recognized owners and ask them for their perspectives on this trend and how they are approaching this disruptive method of building.

Industrialized construction is becoming more important than ever, considering current housing shortages and a decline in skilled labor. Optimizing factory processes is thus essential for productivity; however, changes to lines can be both expensive and disruptive. In this presentation we will demonstrate how a process-based digital twin can help to analyze and optimize a factory. First, a factory information model is created using discrete event simulation and virtual reality. This model is then updated using a variety of sensors that can measure baseline performance. Together, the model and sensors produce a digital twin of a factory that serves as a virtual test bed for evaluating the manufacturing process and optimizing factory layout and resource allocation to mitigate any adverse effects. We’ll share preliminary results from an ongoing project to integrate energy efficiency technologies into modular buildings with little or no additional lead time and first cost.

Industrialized construction is here to stay; prefabricated elements in the built environment and the design-for-manufacture-and-assembly (DfMA) process that enables it are fast becoming the norm across all sectors. So why is it that most of the case studies and best practices we see relate to volumetric modular construction of housing and hospitality? What about the vast but largely unsung impact of advanced building products, single-trade assemblies, and multitrade assemblies that make up the majority of the market? This panel will invite leaders from across the prefabrication continuum to explore why it's not just about modular.

The UK Government has joined the private sector in its commitment to a Platforms approach to industrialized construction and DfMA, outlining how this process underpins UK policy for social infrastructure in its ‘Construction Playbook’. The supporting plan to unify and mobilize data seeks to identify cross-department commonalities to inform the centralized, standardized design that will create economies of scale great enough to supply predictable, consistent pipelines and bolster a disaggregated manufacturing supply chain. Plugged into the existing supply chain, the barrier to entry is low, with no need for vertical integration or investment in manufacturing/prefabrication. As a result, opportunities for new programme-level roles will arise. Already a major feature in the procurement of 40 UK healthcare facilities, not only is this approach transforming the way the UK delivers public sector assets, but it is also paving the way for swift mainstream adoption.

The construction industry is changing. Skilled labor is in short supply and increasingly hard to find. Contractors are becoming more specialized. Productivity across the entire process has become a larger focus. One’s carbon footprint is being factored into operational strategy. And by 2050, we’ll have 2.5 billion more people living in cities. 
 
These trends call for a new way of designing and building — to help make increasingly complex projects, less complex and shift the industry from a “project” mindset to a “product” mindset. This shift will help make the architectural design process more efficient, allow subcontractors to you start fabrication faster, respond to bids sooner, spend less time creating manufacturing related digital documentation, and standardize/scale their overall ability to produce predicable work.

Add to that the risk of natural disasters and global events, and the industry is forced to look at efficient, replicable, and sustainable practices. Industrialized construction is one of the ways the industry is trying to resolve these challenges. But the question remains: Is industrialized construction a solution, or can we do something more? In this class, you'll learn how the Manufacturing Informed Design API takes industrialized construction to the next level by introducing productization into the solution. It provides for defining, designing, and building with customizable construction products that are manufacturable and can be assembled on-site or in the shop. You'll learn how informed design supports Inventor and Revit software through Autodesk Construction Cloud in delivering sustainable and replicable solutions for homes, schools, and health care.

After a 14-year journey through multiple iterations, SLI has arrived at a point where it can build a 14-story high-rise structure in a factory and assemble it on a jobsite as if it was a kit of parts. But we’re far from the end of the journey. For example, we're now 60% of the way from completing a load-bearing version of our solution that will be assembled as a low-rise residential home for people experiencing homelessness. Without significant refinement in our manufacturing processes and assembly processes, we won’t achieve the level of affordability that we intend for our solution to provide. So, we clearly understand the necessity of transforming our design manufacturing and delivery processes via a comprehensive use of digital tools. Our partnership with Autodesk is intended to be a mutually beneficial collaboration as a result of our bringing to Autodesk all of our current and past experiences gleaned from our industrialized construction journey.

In 2017, the U.K. government funded an analysis of the various costs associated with a typical construction project, and identified that for every pound spent, just more than 51% results in residual asset value for the client. The Construction Innovation Hub (CIH) was subsequently established with the vision to cause change and demonstrate better solutions to deliver the U.K. government £35 billion pipeline. The chosen strategy was to develop, prototype, and test platform solutions (pDFMA), with a common “kit of parts.” This would demonstrate the delivery of better outcomes for social infrastructure. Integral to the strategy was the use of a new digital toolchain to unlock the approach. Grimshaw Architects, Buro Happold engineers, and Mace Construction were commissioned to develop a new suite of configurators to enable the "kit of parts” approach during procurement and delivery.
