Our smartphones are filled with apps that track numerous things like our heart rate, running speed, and sleep patterns, but what can this new world of internet-connected devices do for our work lives in industry? Growth of a new class of products called “connected devices” or the “Internet of Things (IoT)” will usher in a new era of smarter, more cost-effective factories. These devices will make production data visible and useful, and will do much to help factory managers make more strategic decisions. This class will cover emerging trends in the Internet of Things and introduce a new, easy-to-implement application for managing factory operations. The cloud-based application uses data collected from wireless, non-intrusive sensors, and displays it in the context of a digital model in order to deliver actionable insights for energy and production management.

Today, there are more than 16 billion active wireless-connected devices, and that number will more than double and exceed 40 billion by 2020, according to ABI Research. With more and more smart things surrounding us in smart homes, offices, streets, and cities, can our 2D and 3D design also become smarter and connected? Can our design data become a smart living thing that connects to the physical world, monitors and interacts with the surrounding environment, and helps deliver performance visibility toward predictive maintenance and reduced downtime? The Research Team at Autodesk, Inc., has been developing technology for the Internet of Things (IoT) since before people called it that. Project Dasher is a building performance management tool that displays historical and real-time sensor data inside a building model. The Research Team has taken the learning acquired while developing Project Dasher and used it to create technology that addresses the needs of the broader IoT market. This session will look at how IoT APIs (application programming interfaces) from Autodesk Research can be used to display information in websites integrating the viewer from the Forge Platform to inform the design process and even power generative design. Technologists from Topcon Positioning Systems, Lenovo, and HP share how big data is influencing tomorrow's technologies, and offer insights into the Internet of Things (IoT), including ambitious projects already underway.

The emerging IoT space holds enormous potential for positive social, environmental, and financial impact if it is built with the most important node at its center: people. In order for the next wave of innovation around connected devices to happen, people must be able to understand the technology, relate it to their lives, and envision and prototype solutions to real-world problems, even when these problems are relevant only for the few. This, in turn, will only happen when the Internet becomes a material that is accessible to non-engineers and non-experts who can grasp and deploy interactions with the Internet in the physical world as easily as they can with physical materials.

Interest in the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to grow as governments, companies and individuals begin to realize the potential that a data-driven world has to offer. This talk explores how the construction industry can use the data it collects via tools like BIM and sensors to feed into the wider IoT agenda and the benefits this could bring. We will discuss how we can utilise the data we collect for a variety of purposes including benchmarking and continuous improvement, while also considering how we can combine our data with data sets from other sectors to create greater insights for the industry, client, and end user. Finally, we will look at how we can manage some of the challenges of being a data-driven industry including data management and storage, pain/gain share, ethical considerations, and the need to recruit staff with different skill sets.

Artificial intelligence-machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL)-is advancing rapidly. Industry 4.0 smart factories will provide (through the Internet of Things and data sharing) the massive amount of data required for accurate ML/DL training. Where are we today and how will this technology impact manufacturing in the future?

Our industry has changed. New tools are challenging the traditional design process and impacting our cost structures. At the same time, a wave of Millennials and Generation Zers are entering the workforce and changing corporate cultures everywhere. Autodesk Research has been working on the display of building performance data in a rich 3D environment since 2009. During the last 2 years this development effort has shifted to make heavy use of the Forge platform to integrate the display of sensor data with high-quality, as-built BIM. The project has also evolved beyond the initial focus on building performance to explore use-cases in construction and factory management. This session looks at some of the lessons Autodesk Research has learned during the development of Dasher 360, with a particular focus on the benefits found from using the Forge platform to reinvent a heavyweight desktop client for the cloud. We will talk about how tools such as Dasher 360 can integrate data from a variety of sources, creating compelling, web-based tools that dramatically expand the use of design data. While the session will focus largely on the development of Dasher 360, and therefore be of interest to programmers and software development managers' it will highlight how Forge has been used alongside advanced data visualisation techniques to create a tool for facilities managers and building owners/operators. People from various backgrounds will therefore find the session to be of interest.

Parsons will highlight the capabilities available within an airport digital twin by showing our work to support the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport digital twin project. The digital twin includes a main runway and passenger terminal. We’ll detail our work to help define digital governance standards, develop a runway-specific asset ontology, and integrate data across multiple source systems: Civil 3D software, Revit software, Infor EAM, Johnson Controls, Veoci Part 139 airfield inspection software, Esri GIS, and ViewMondo weather station data running within the Microsoft Azure Digital Twins cloud. The twin provides real-time updates via Internet of Things (IOT) runway sensors that specify temperature, surface temperature, humidity, and water film. This session will share unique insights and lessons learned regarding the technical and management workflows to plan and execute a digital twin for critical infrastructure assets. A digital twin addresses the industry challenge of how to automate and unify the management of complex civil infrastructure.
