This session is not for people who are heavy Dynamo software users. This session is for people who aren’t programmers (visual or other), but from time to time may need to use Dynamo as part of their workflows. It’s also for people who have heard of Dynamo, or visual programming, but never thought it was something they could do (but it totally is!). It’s also for those who just don’t think Dynamo can help them in their everyday workflows (don’t be so sure). By the end of this session, you will have an introductory understanding of Dynamo. You will learn that Dynamo can be used to create geometry with parametric relationships, and that this geometry can then be pushed into a Revit software project or family using the Revit software database. You will learn that Dynamo can do more than just geometry. It can also help with everyday tasks like creating grids and levels, adding some trees to your site, performing an energy analysis, or even changing your text from sentence case to all CAPS. When adopted throughout a company, people can be intimidated by visual programming, Dynamo can feel confusing, and collaboration can be difficult. Therefore, managing Dynamo libraries is labor intensive. GitHub is widely used in software engineering for facilitating collaboration and consistency of code over time. However, it has never been applied in computational design. DynaHub—an open-source Dynamo extension that connects Dynamo to GitHub—bridges a gap by letting you push and pull automations and packages from a centralized and accessible repository. Any user or organization, through their GitHub account, can use the Dynamo scripts stored in their own repository, knowing that they are using the most recent and validated version. By adopting this strategy at Willow, we experienced an increase in productivity, confidence, and usage.

This lab is not for Dynamo pros, but for Dynamo novices looking to expand their skills and do more with their data. In this session, we’ll learn how to manage and manipulate data from a Revit file with Dynamo. We’ll also learn how to use Dynamo to help us add data to a Revit model from another source, such as Microsoft Excel. These days, when working with project data, data visualization is a must; we’ll explore this using the Archi-lab Mandrill Dynamo package from Konrad Sobon. We’ll also explore some of the new features and updates of the latest release of Dynamo.

Extracting data from Revit software and changing existing data within Revit models is exactly what contractors need, and Dynamo software is perfect for these types of jobs. For example, if you want to determine the bottom and side areas of a ramp for formwork calculations, it’s easy to do in Dynamo software. Do you want to split up floor slabs based on pour joints? Or perhaps you need to export all those adaptive component points out to Microsoft Excel? Well, you can also do those tasks with Dynamo software. Take this class and you’ll learn how to create Dynamo software graphs to perform these and many other practical tasks that are perfect for your office. We'll showcase this by building an extension that embeds a web server & REST API inside Dynamo, allowing users to remotely open & run graphs, extract results, add/remove nodes, & more, all from a web browser. We’ll start by exploring the structure & concepts of a Dynamo extension through annotated code samples. Using the Dynamo API, we’ll then learn how to build up our extension in a modular way, so that we can collaboratively add new features to our extension. Dynamo software has transformed several Revit workflows over the past few years. One of the benefits to using Dynamo is that you don't have to know any programming language. However, as you become more familiar with Dynamo, you can easily pick up the DesignScript syntax, which is essentially Dynamo software's programming language. Once you understand how to use DesignScript, you can create graphs more quickly and interact with Revit models in new ways. For example, you can perform advanced calculations, or have Dynamo select certain equipment or components based on design criteria.

People often associate Dynamo software with designing complex parametric geometry; but Dynamo software is not just a tool for creating funky shapes, it’s a whiz at processing all kinds of data. This class will demonstrate various examples of how Dynamo software has been applied to common MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineering tasks to make them more efficient or more accurate. We will cover linking Revit Space naming utility information to Revit software families, using Dynamo software as an engine for MEP calculations, using Dynamo software to give you visual feedback on how hard equipment is being asked to work in your design, and using Microsoft Excel as a source of data for much of the above. You also needn't worry if you are completely new to Dynamo software (most MEP folk will be), as we will cover enough basics to get you going before we dive into the advanced stuff.
