Join us for an introduction to Autodesk Generative Design technology. In this class, we will cover the vision for Generative Design, provide technology demonstrations, and walk through customer problems that highlight the value of employing generative-design techniques in real-world applications.

The assessment of Generative Design in Fusion 360 software is based on the capability assessment model related to the key capability areas of generative design for general applicability and their associated criteria outlined in the intrinSIM Market Report entitled “A Vision for Generative Design,” which explores the potential of a shift enabled by generative design and what is required to enable that design shift. intrinSIM has developed a process with a quantified assessment for each key capability area in the capability assessment model and criteria outlined in “A Vision for Generative Design.” The same capability assessment model can be used for determining requirements for specific generative design applications, and the suitability of generative design workflows for specific applications.

This hands-on lab will allow users to get some hands-on time with generative design. We will cover how to define a generative design study from scratch, apply loads, constraints, and manufacturing methods. Once completed, we will explore the results and export an outcome and then use the innovate tools with Fusion 360 to adjust the design to suit the manufacturing method we would like to use. We will cover 2 example through the workshop, one focused around manufacturing products and the other around building products.

Project Refinery graduated in April to become Generative Design in Revit 2021 software. This new suite of tools enables generative design workflows that automate the creation and analysis of design options directly in the Revit context. This briefing will showcase the value that generative design brings to the design process, and show how analyzing more data-backed design options leads to an enhanced design process. We will cover a brief history of Project Refinery (now Generative Design in Revit) and show how customers are using the tools. We will cover the product principles that we use to prioritize new work and future direction. Finally, we will address the future of the product, where we will be investing, and our road map for achieving the future vision.

Generative design is the process of setting design parameters and then using computational analysis to come up with multiple solutions. It has been widely used in the manufacturing industry; it is also gaining more attention in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry in space design, sustainability studies, and urban planning. However, the construction industry has not fully invested in the power of generative design. With more contractors using BIM (Building Information Modeling) to deliver projects, more data is available and can be used to generate and manipulate outcomes. This class will focus on applications of generative design that optimize construction processes. We will present a background on generative design as well as case studies. The class will also show how to get started with generative design for construction using current technologies, including Dynamo. The digitization of today’s projects, along with the power of computation, creates the potential to facilitate construction processes and build better buildings.

During Autodesk University 2019, we saw many applications of Autodesk’s generative design features. Most of them shared one common feature: the final model was heavily modified from the generated shape. Adapting the generative design outcome for production and meeting usage requirements—sometimes sophisticated—is the most time-consuming and problematic task. Although this topic raises doubts and ambiguities, it seems to be largely overlooked and insufficiently explained. It's like a bottleneck in a smooth generative-design workflow—like a gap between an excellent generative solver and many established manufacturing methods. We want to bridge this gap and comprehensively address this issue for anyone working with or interested in generative design. In this class, we will walk through the creation of four different approaches to workspace layout using various Generative Design studies in Revit, including everything from “out of the box” sample studies to “built from scratch” Dynamo scripts that have been exported for use in generative design. Engineers and designers face an internal struggle when choosing between traditional design methods engrained through years of practice and new Generative Design workflows. Simply applying traditional design methods to Generative Design tools often leads to insufficient results which can be used for inspiration, but are not ready for manufacture. This hands-on lab will bridge the gap between traditional and Generative Design workflows, empowering users to complete the design process by leveraging Generative Design in powerful ways. Attendees will leverage Autodesk Generative Design alongside Meshmixer, Netfabb, Fusion 360, and Nastran to create a finished product, while exploring workflows which greatly improve productivity.

Much of the early work around generative design at Autodesk was focused on manufactured products. Increasingly, though, it is being applied to design problems in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Autodesk Research—mainly through its New York-based architectural studio, The Living—is exploring how one can use generative design to solve a variety of problems in the AEC space. Recent examples include Project Discover, where survey data from Autodesk's Toronto-based employees was used to help choose the layout for our new office in the MaRS Discovery District. Generative design was also used in the design of the Autodesk University 2017 exhibit hall. During this session we'll take a look at the tools available from Autodesk to apply generative design in the AEC industry. And we'll show how to get started with generative design by driving Dynamo with Refinery, Autodesk's new optimization engine.

Autodesk Generative Design gives users the ability to analytically engineer component models that adhere to multiple design and manufacturing constraints, which are optimized for Additive Manufacturing Processes. In this session, we'll explore Generative Design for additive, casting, and CNC manufacturing. We'll discuss the different applications of this technology and apply these to a range of industry problems from automotive, aerospace, and architecture. We will cover the complete end-to-end workflow utilising Generative Design all the way through to manufacturing for each method. We will also look beyond today's Generative Design to the work we are doing to integrate this technology into the factory of the future. We will explore some of the scientific research we are undertaking to continuously improve Generative Design and some of the methodologies being considered for a digitised reconfigurable additive manufacturing facility. Attendees will leave with a familiarity of the generative design process from a basic through to an advanced level, manufacturing, and also gain insight into the work being carried out on future digitised additive manufacturing factories.

Generative Design in Fusion 360 software is extremely powerful for creating designs optimized for performance, manufacturing, and cost.
