What are the developments of smart cities, and how can they begin to change the way we deliver our buildings and infrastructure assets? This session will introduce and give an overview of the importance of smart cities. Smart-city technologies are beginning to populate the construction industry and provide solutions for government and city councils around the world. By providing a consistent methodology using governing standards, smart-city agendas can be defined. There are a variety of technology startups focused on developing solutions to enable a smart-city agenda. This session will give examples of these innovative companies and detail how they use different technologies to support how our cities are changing with increases in population.

Smart cities will be part of our daily lives within ten years, creating a sustainable future for humanity in Industry 5.0. This talk will highlight the key concepts of smart cities, digital twin technologies, and the movement of indigenous futurism to identify solutions for climate change. This session will explore how brands play a major role in this sustainable future, the role of the consumer, and the value we can all add to this.

One of the biggest challenges with technological advancement is bringing improvements and maintaining the identity of cities. With microchips being treated as commodities, you can connect any and all assets from cities to a smart database. Learn in this class how InfraWorks software works as an interactive map, replicable to any and every city that seeks to manage its municipality more efficiently and intelligently.

This session will cover a case study of BIM (Building Information Modeling) implementation for a complex urban project designed as a smart city. The 126-hectare project is called Garonne Eiffel, and sits in a large development area in Bordeaux, France. The heart of Garonne Eiffel is the Belvedere subdistrict, a 12-hectare (30 acre) area. BIM has been implemented on the Belvedere project, which is the first key step for a future smart city. We will present the project with its specific challenges (urban density, collaboration, technical complexity). We will discuss the BIM strategy applied, including good and not so good aspects. We will describe the workflows created with the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection to show how InfraWorks software, Civil 3D software, Revit software, and Navisworks software are key tools to urban design. We’ll show how we used InfraWorks to assemble Civil 3D modelization for the Belvedere project: buildings, roads, trees, and street equipment. And, we’ll show how Dynamo helped us improve our productivity.

A city can employ a variety of smart gadgets and consider itself a “smart city.” But to increase efficiency and productivity, a smart city uses data and integrated technologies to improve internal processes—ultimately improving the lives of the citizens and businesses that fill it. With the increasing collaboration between Autodesk and Esri, a city or organization can better use geographic information system (GIS) data throughout the project lifecycle. BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS integrations empower users to introduce geographic context within a project to assess the environmental impact, collect and analyze data from the field, and improve communication with stakeholders. This session will show users integrations that can benefit them throughout the engineering process. We’ll demo the connections between Autodesk and Esri, specifically focusing on functions in the planning and design process. We’ll demonstrate specific workflows, showing the business value of integrating engineering workflows with BIM and GIS.

The Brazilian city of Curitiba was declared the smartest city in the world, according to the World Smart City Awards, a prize awarded by Fira Barcelona in Spain. This is considered one of the major honors in the areas of innovation and smart cities. This session will show participants the evolution of the building information modeling (BIM) process in Curitiba. We will especially look at BIM within the scope of the city's urban planning agency (IPPUC) and its executing body for structural works programs (UTAG)—with the implementation of the BIM laboratory (LaBIM PMC), the use of 3D models to present works to city residents, the interactions developed in conjunction with CIM (city information modeling), and the application of the models for the execution process of the works, mainly in relation to quality management, scope, and schedule.

Our session will explore how BIM can be used as a vehicle by cities to capture, store and disseminate multiple levels of data e.g. building, social, environmental, government, economic; as well as generate additional benefits for the city as a whole.

We will look at how a 3D model can be created in REVIT/Infraworks and populated with data from many sources e.g. sensors, real time traffic information, social forums etc., which can then be accessed by governments and citizens using tablets, apps and dashboards and software such as BIM360Field. We will also discuss the benefits that can be generated including better decision making, easier benchmarking, improved city performance, greater connectivity and enhanced community engagement.

InfraWorks 360 software has tremendous potential for planners and architects. In this era of big open data and the integration of the Internet of Things with the built environment, municipal governments must find new ways to use this growing wealth of information to improve civic engagement, promote economic development and entrepreneurship, and make data-driven decisions. From this perspective, InfraWorks 360 software can not only create a unified platform for all of this data, but also visualize it in 3D, combining all your Revit (RVT) files into a single model, rendering in real time, and running various analyses. This class will use real-world examples to look at all of the features around district planning, transportation infrastructure projects, and airports. The rupture of the dam in Ayrton Senna Park in Brazil impaired one of the few tourist attractions in a small town in the Brazilian countryside, generating significant social and environmental impact. Schettini Engenharia understood that for this atypical situation, it would be necessary to bring together some strategic partners to develop the entire building information modeling (BIM) solution with the help of geographic information system (GIS) solutions, starting the first smart-city project in the region. Using Autodesk and Innovyze solutions, the firm aimed to adopt sustainable practices in its proposal, mitigating part of the damage caused by the rupture of this dam, and bringing safety and better quality of life to this community.
