This session will present the new National Institute of Steel Detailers (NISD) curriculum for the Certificate of Detailing in Building Information Modeling (CD-BIM). This progressive new curriculum is free online and was done in a collaborative partnership with Autodesk, Inc. It highlights the foundational elements of BIM and additionally covers key topics such as model element Level of Development (LOD) in conjunction with the 2015 BIMForum’s LOD Specification. The course will show the fundamentals of creating and implementing good modeling practices as well as quality control and checking. It will also include the creation of shop drawings, details, erection drawings, and other fundamental elements of steel fabrication, such as advanced bills of materials. The curriculum is geared toward high school students and secondary education, and it introduces individuals to the structural steel industry, creating the next generation of steel detailers as well as structural engineers and steel fabricators.

- RSRebecca StanfordRebecca is a senior project coordinator with IKERD. She has worked with Mr. Ikerd since 2005 and oversees the firms work in civil and structural modeling. He has over a decade of experience working in Building Information Modeling and over these years she has contributed to the BIM efforts and coordination of numerous projects, including complicated healthcare projects with over one million square feet of construction. She has led the BIM coordination during design and construction of complex projects, using her communication skills and mastery of 3D applications.
- WIWILL IKERDWill Ikerd—PE, CM-BIM, LEED AP—is principal at IKERD Consulting, an internationally recognized consulting group in buildings, civil, and industrial construction markets specializing in using Building Information Modeling (BIM)-enabled Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). He serves as an expert consultant in design and construction cases involving BIM and VDC processes. Currently, he is on the board of directors of the national BIM Forum, and he was past chair of the Structural Engineering Institute’s national BIM Committee. He has won the Best Speaker award twice from the International Structures conference, and he was named Structural Engineering magazine’s “Top 10 Leaders in Structural Engineering,” Glass Magazine’s “Top 30 under 40,” and Building Design & Construction magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40.” He has served as PCI’s BIM consultant in that industry’s innovation initiatives.
