Bridging Mechanical Software and BIM: A Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Plant in Morocco

The project consists of a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Morocco of 284 million euros. The water stored in an uphill tank will be released into a 3-kilometre transfer line (penstock and galleries) and travel on a natural slope to a tank about 550 meters downhill. A 350 MW hydroelectric plant will be built along the penstock between the 2 reservoirs. The reversible plant will generate electricity when operating in turbine mode and pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir in pumping mode. The system will thus generate renewable energy on demand. The system can be switched between pumping and turbine mode up to 20 times a day, depending on the amount of surplus electricity available or the needs of the Moroccan electricity grid. This class will focus on the plant and the project BIM challenges and goals. I will explain the different actors, their scope of work, their tools, and the different software uses. I will also explain how this new way of working was implemented even if all actors had never completed a BIM project before. The main obstacles of the project, concerning digital and interoperability will be highlighted and explained. The class will review all experiments that have been done to achieve 2 main goals: allow a good model integration in the design software despite their differences and produce correct 2D plans. The class will show how Revit can integrate mechanical files made by Siemens NX through .sat files and Inventor, and the best practices and ways to integrate the models correctly. It will also show the reverse way how the mechanical software can integrate Revit files. It will present a workflow to integrate all models into Navisworks through Revit to be able to do classic 3D coordination. The presentation will conclude with the main benefits of doing 3D models instead of 2D even through a huge and long workflow.

  • Nabil Nougha
    Nabil is a piping engineer working as designated support specialist at Autodesk for the Customer Success Organisation since 2011. He is actively supporting piping BIM and Interoperability features within Autodesk range of products portfolio such as AutoCAD verticals, Revit, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Inventor, BIM 360, Navisworks and more. He has 11 years of background experience in various projects as consultant for EPC in Oil & Gas, Water, Chemical and R&D for food industries, from process design to implementation including superintendent and commissioning roles.
  • Philippe Testard
    Philippe is a BIM manager in the corporate BIM office of Vinci Construction Grands Projets (subsidiary of VINCI, fourth largest worldwide general contractor) which specialises in the management and construction of large infrastructure projects. Philippe's experience in BIM started some years ago with an historic construction renovation site in the center of Paris: “The Covent of the Cordeliers.” That is where he first started to define processes to exchange data and how to exploit them to their maximum. Philippe then joined Vinci Construction Grands Projects to work for several projects in BIM in tender phases or design phases. Philippe is also a trainer of Revit and Navisworks for head office personal and site personnel and, since last AU Las Vegas, is an Autodesk Certified Revit professional. He is currently working as the BIM manager on a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Morocco which will be the main case study of his class.
  • Andreas Marschall
    Andreas has been working at Andritz for more than 15 years. As a member of the Engineering and Design department he participated in various projects (from small to large scale) around the world. With more than 10 years of experience, he is a key member of the 3D team (Inventor) in Vienna. Recently, he was assigned as R&D Project Manager for BIM activities at Andritz Hydro. His main areas of responsibility include collaboration with external stakeholders as well as the internal project team, and implementation and creation of workflows and standards.
