Integrating Embodied Carbon Feedback in Early-Stage Design

AECOM’s Aman Singhvi shares his method for measuring and visualizing the total embodied carbon impact of your buildings when it matters most—during the design phase.



 

Construction accounts for 39% of all global CO2 emissions. The industry has made important strides in reducing operational energy use, but there is still a need to address the total embodied energy of our buildings—the carbon consumed from first extraction of resources through operations to end-of-life. AECOM’s Aman Singhvi shares a new approach for understanding and accounting for embodied carbon by visualizing impact during the design process, when implementing carbon-conscious decisions is easier, and less expensive. By creating intuitive comparisons such as “trees saved” or “plane rides taken,” designers can become more aware of their impact, and more empowered to reduce it.

About the speaker

Aman Singhvi is a high-performance design specialist at AECOM. His efforts are focused at the intersection of sustainability and technology, applying design thinking to solve challenges in architecture and building science. He holds a master’s degree in Design Studies from Harvard University.
