The architecture, engineering, and construction industry is facing the need to provide the best design and engineering solutions within tight deadlines. Generative design is one of the most powerful approaches to overcoming this challenge by automating and exploring all possible design variations according to a set of design parameters. This class will show that generative design can be used for MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design engineering. This class will use Revit 2019 software, Dynamo Visual Studio, and Project Fractal for MEP generative design. Specifically, you will discover how to create a ceiling plan via generative design, where the layout of air terminal devices and lighting devices will be automatically generated and explored. Moreover, we’ll explore thousands of design variations and coordinate them across disciplines by using Project Fractal. Wales, Alaska, is the most westerly inhabited village in North America. Having easy access to the site is not feasible if you should happen to forget what it looks like—not to mention that it’s covered in snow for 75% of the year. So let’s build a road over 10 miles of permafrost with the use of 12,000 acres of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. Using InfraWorks 360 software, we’ll work in 4D and adjust the road location over the permafrost. Then we’ll use InfraWorks 360 Hydrology to determine the watersheds and culvert locations, and size them for us. This session features InfraWorks 360 and AutoCAD Civil 3D.

As part of Fusion 360 Ultimate software, Autodesk Generative Design is the new design space tool for designers and engineers capitalizing on the power of cloud and artificial intelligence (AI). During this class, we are going to discover how to use it for expanding and increasing the innovation on machinery industries effecting products’ performance and production costs. We will use real customer examples.

In this class, we will focus on geospatial solutions for utilities based on enterprise industry models in Autodesk® Infrastructure Map Server and Autodesk AutoCAD® Map 3D software. In several steps, we will demonstrate all important aspects of building a rich GIS solution using as an example a project for a large water and wastewater group in the Czech Republic. We will cover the project from the migration of five different geospatial solutions into one Autodesk platform to actual activities in integration with external customer relations management (CRM) and maintenance systems. One of the top benefits of this solution is full or partial automation of network statement processes, starting with collecting electronic statement requests from a public site, automatically evaluating them in GIS, and responding in cooperation with CRM and internal processes. This process, as well as additional automation possibilities, will be described and demonstrated on a real example.

This class shows how TME, Inc. has progressed to be a leader in Building Information Modeling (BIM) deliverables. TME adopted BIM in 2007 and took on a rapid change from the traditional 2D design into a 3D design environment. Understanding that BIM was much more than a 3D deliverable, they reached out for help from their Autodesk® Partner, ATG USA. Together, through strategy and communication, we developed a new implementation plan that created tremendous excitement and success. We show you how and what this process of change entailed to help you become more successful in your own firm.

This class begins with educating your bosses or decision-makers about GIS technology with a focus on the benefits of using Autodesk® products with Feature Data Objects (FDO) technology to connect with many GIS and raster data sources. We show how current Autodesk products can use the technology without the need for additional expensive software and contracts. We also show how other electrical utilities use AutoCAD® even with GIS from other vendors. Convince the Power of the facts! We also discuss a real-world upgrade from AutoCAD® Map 3D Enterprise 2012 with Autodesk® MapGuide® 6.5 to Map 3D 2013 and Autodesk® Infrastructure Map Server (AIMS) 2013. The class covers moving the system into full production, using the current process workflow of the utility while retaining the basic look and feel of the application. This class is co-presented with a technical consultant from the Autodesk Global Services Utilities and Telecom Consulting group.

This class will present the challenges that were encountered, the methods that were used to overcome the challenges, and the successes that were achieved while migrating a medium-sized municipal electric utility to AutoCAD Map 3D Enterprise software. Independence Power and Light (IPL) in Independence, Missouri, underwent a full system migration with Autodesk Consulting this year. That migration included replacing many homegrown and legacy systems with modern Autodesk technology as well as integration with and interfaces to other systems vital to the utility. Autodesk Consulting performed a full system assessment and worked closely with IPL to develop a road map to successfully make these changes.

Because not all utilities manage only 1 type of distribution service, it is important for multidiscipline utilities to learn how to manage their GIS in a way that benefits the entire organization. In this class, we feature examples from the City of Alexandria, which is transitioning from a limited CAD-centric process to a multidiscipline GIS-centric process. Attendees learn about the process of data acquisition and how to obtain high-resolution imagery from the various disciplines within the organization. We also show you how to navigate the various stakeholders, determine possible technology issues, and migrate the data to set up the system so it is advantageous to all departments involved. Finally, we discuss some of the ways that the City of Alexandria has deployed their system and how they are planning to move forward in the future with AutoCAD® Utility Design software.

At AU 2012, Andy Morsell of Autodesk Consulting and John Keith of Independence Power and Light (IPL) in Independence, Missouri, presented a class about migrating a medium-sized municipal electric utility to AutoCAD Map 3D Enterprise Electric while the project was still underway. Here we are 1 year later! This year, we present the completed application, which is in production use. Our roundtable session discusses the challenges we faced when interfacing with other systems and integrating with processes and workflows employed at IPL. We discuss the custom Autodesk® Infrastructure Map Server and Autodesk Consulting Mobile Viewer applications deployed at IPL. Interfaces include a service for receiving updates from their custom information system and interfaces to legacy systems that need to remain functional while they are being replaced. We also discuss MultiSpeak® exports to IPL's Milsoft DisSPatch® outage management system.

Generative design in Fusion is not just for complex aerospace components that require expensive and time-consuming additive manufacturing or 5-axis CNC. In this session we will demonstrate an end-to-end workflow from 2.5-axis Fusion generative design through CAM for “everyday” CNC parts which can be programmed and machined in a matter of minutes, not hours or days. Starting with generative design, we will explore how to make the best use of the new 2.5-axis machining constraints with one of the Autodesk nerds behind the technology, then discuss editing and refining outcomes. Finally, one of the Autodesk experts in CAM for generative outcomes will share strategies for programming and producing the generative parts. The emphasis will be on improving designer and manufacturing engineer productivity, reducing CAD, CAM, and machining time, and going from problem definition through production in hours, not days.

Candy Mechanics are a London-based chocolatier producing custom gift products. Their 2 products are Candy Cards and Lolpops. Their popup stores and corporate events provide an exciting experience for the customer. With your head scanned in 3D and then carved in front of you with a robot, it is important that the magic is not lost with software that does not connect or work well. They have been working with Autodesk's Advanced Consulting team to use Autodesk products to create a cohesive and robust workflow. The first step was to move the process to Autodesk's desktop-based CAM tools and automate the process of creating the design, calculating the toolpaths, and outputting the NC code. This was used to great effect and meant that designs were calculated in a speedy fashion and onboarding time of kiosk operators was reduced as they no longer needed to learn how to use the CAM tools. The drawback for a start-up company was the step cost of purchasing software licenses. As the company grows they need to make a large investment for each new software license. Scalability comes at a cost. The next phase of work has been to move the process from the desktop to the cloud. The process of automation remains the same as for the desktop products: calculate toolpaths, post process, push data to machine scheduling system, feed data to the machine. Candy Mechanics is able to use Forge to calculate toolpaths and Fusion Production to interface with their machines tools. A practical demonstration of the technology and robot machining will be performed as part of the talk.

Dutch contractor BAM Infra and materials company Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix have joined forces with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) to set up Europe’s first industrial 3D-printing factory for concrete. The advantage of 3D concrete printing is that it enables the fabrication of curved, organic shapes, which are difficult to manufacture using conventional formwork. The process utilizes generative-design techniques to develop complex shapes, difficult for a human to design, but within a robot’s capabilities, resulting in material savings of 40%. The plant opened in Jan 2019 and is currently building the world’s longest 3D-printed bridge: a 28-meter, organically formed structure for the city of Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands.
