It’s easy to criticize the construction industry—plagued with low productivity, high risk, low margin, and little investment in research and development. We’ve heard this messaging repeatedly, but what of the growing and positive trends toward design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) and the industrialization of construction (IC)? These are often portrayed as niche and specialized, but they’re fast developing to become the norm. This class will highlight examples of how governments, traditional general contractors, forward-thinking designers, and emerging manufacturers across the globe are disrupting the industry and adopting a variety of technology to support their goals. We’ll present trends in DFMA and IC, and explain challenges to adoption. The industry is portrayed as bad—but it’s getting better.

PERI as supplier of the construction industry is faced with the challenges to meet the multitude of different requirements of our clients. Clients are traditional well-established construction companies , but also increasingly project managers, architects as well as building owners. In this presentation we will discuss how to create and store standard parts (devices) into a library and how to build and store standard configurations of those parts into a catalog of controlled circuits. We will also detail various methods for developing a standard workflow, and we'll look at how to hone in on the most effective methodology using AutoCAD Electrical software. We will give consideration to the incorporation of existing (brownfield) projects, and we will demonstrate how to produce various drawing sets once rendering is complete. You will also learn how to extract a bill of materials from AutoCAD Electrical software and convert it into a standard format ready for exportation into a material ordering system. We will place emphasis on a step-by-step presentation approach, and we will allot time for questions and answers so that audiences will find the presentation useful, regardless of experience with AutoCAD Electrical software.

When it comes to Building Information Modeling, we seem to have the building and modeling parts down pretty well, but the information part continues to cause the architecture, engineering, and construction industry to evolve and change. The problem with the information part is not its existence, but rather its longevity and connection to the building. The information exists, but in too many forms: spreadsheets, databases, catalogs, and other miscellaneous documents. So, how do you tie these other data sources to the model? We will examine various methods for overcoming data loss by bringing the information part in early and keeping it in an accessible form that can feed the lifecycle of the building. Discussion will center around the creation, maintenance, and accessibility of room data. We will examine various options for making the data accessible through multiple platforms simultaneously.

This class overviews basic setups, installation, and use of A360 Collaboration for Revit cloud service, and will examine how it has been used, advantages and disadvantages, things to consider for remote access and telecommuting, and how to push content to A360 cloud-based collaboration service. Prefabrication and automation in offsite construction requires building models to be rich in data. The generation of construction drawings, creation of a bill of materials and the application of fabricated information is required in the model. In wood construction for example, it requires modeling of accurate processing (precutting) and assembly of prefabricated items including tooling (e.g. nailing and milling operations). All this, including derived data in the form of CNC files, shop drawings, etc., needs to be accessible by all stakeholders - the builders, prefabricators and project managers. By combining Autodesk products and APIs, hsbcad has developed improved workflows to create and modify rich model content. Revit content is able to enrich cloud based BIM that drives CNC equipment and improves on site processes. BIM isn’t enough for successful Builders anymore. BIM’s siloed methods don’t encourage the communication and collaboration needed among Owners, Designers, Builders and Trade Partners. There is a paradigm shift happening in the AEC industry where BIM is being replaced by Virtual Design & Construction. VDC’s macro focus supports the collaborative effort needed to meet shrinking timelines on increasingly more difficult projects. No project team will succeed without integrating the people, processes, and technology available to the AEC industry. We are in a golden age of technology and individual knowledge. Alex Belkofer from McCarthy will share their experience of BIM & VDC from design through construction of the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station. He will discuss their workflows, the collaborative BIM Execution Plan the team developed, and how the team collaborated to overcome the challenges of constructing a 120,000 sq. ft. modern aquarium in a 125-year-old national historic landmark.

The U.K. government's plan for growth highlighted the critical importance of an efficient construction industry to the U.K. economy. The construction sector is a critical growth area for them, therefore, providing a more efficient process will aid in this plan. U.K. construction represents some 7% of GDP or £110 billion per annum of expenditure—some 40% of this being in the public sector, with central government being the industry's biggest customer. As a result, the aim to effectively save on construction projects was at the forefront of the government objective. This class will summarize the final steps toward reaching what the industry is now familiar with defining as Level 2 Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the final steppingstones toward achieving this. As we move closer to April 2015, the so-called deadline, we are seeing many projects achieve their compliance and an industry scrambling to train, add skills to their teams, and promote BIM as part of their services.

In this class, we will focus on the connection between the BIM model and project specifications. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then your specifications are a picture of your construction documents. Yet these two document types are typically done separately and without any automated coordination, requiring users to manually assure that the objects represented in the model actually are correctly represented in the specifications. We will go through the process of setting up the coordination environment, as well as the scenario of coordination with those outside your office environment who may be off your company network.
