Revit software is a very powerful Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform, but you can squeeze a lot more out of it by investing some time into your families. This class will take you over some innovating methods for making your Revit MEP software families more powerful and easier for your teams to use. Do you want to be able to use the information in your families in formulas but don't know where to start (Inconsistent Units!)? Do you have families that are difficult for users to configure because you need more than just a box? Do you use equipment that is so bespoke that you don't feel you can build a standard family for it? This class will show you how to overcome all of these issues and more so that you get more value out of the time you spend building Revit MEP software families.

This class will provide an introduction to building Revit plug-ins using C# programming language. We will start by using Microsoft Visual Studio to create and deploy a Revit plug-in using C#. Once we understand how to build and use Revit plug-ins, we will delve deeper into the C# programming language, using it to tap into the Revit API to extend the functionality of Revit software. We will focus on 3 different exercises that utilize different areas of the Revit API, touching on useful C# techniques as we do.

The techniques used to model geology on sites often do not work well for linear routes where the positions of the boreholes are not conducive to generating usable triangulated surfaces. This class will discuss the techniques to employ when working with boreholes positioned along a length of proposed road or rail network. It will also examine the workflow of using geotechnical profile views to sketch geology interpretation, which can then be incorporated back into the strata surfaces, letting the user visualize and model the subsurface geology. The class will step through the process of creating geotechnical profiles, and sketching and updating profiles from which 3D feature lines are created; these are then incorporated as breaklines back into the AutoCAD Civil 3D surfaces, producing usable triangulated surfaces, enabling the geology subsurface to be modeled and visualized on linear routes.

For a while, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) disciplines in general, and electrical in particular, have been somewhat behind architecture and structure disciplines when it comes to utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) capabilities; hence, electrical engineers usually used BIM software as a drafting tool while keeping the same old calculation sheets and process. The purpose of this class is to give a detailed approach on how electrical analysis and workflow can be embedded successfully in BIM software, to motivate MEP and electrical engineers to take the design process to the next levels—not just by the integration between analysis software, but by preparing a full workflow. The lecture will describe embedding electrical analysis using Revit software, Revit API, and simple database; following electrical design tasks such as feeder sizing and protection sizing; explaining how Revit is used as the main tool and central platform for the electrical design process; and also making the electrical and MEP engineers think of the next level.

All of us have been there at one time or another: faced with the daunting mundane task of manually inputting data from a certain program to another. And this not only takes an extremely long time, but it is also prone to error—along with the fact that the information is static and isolated. So, instead of spending more money on a new add-in or software program, this session will demonstrate how to capitalize on Revit software, Dynamo, and Microsoft Excel (software programs already on our computers) to produce accurate HVAC load results for HVAC design. By standardizing data, methodologies, and output, the triple bottom line (TBL) can augment BIM (Building Information Modeling) (6D = 3D + cost + schedule + TBL). Automation of triple-bottom-line cost-benefit analysis (TBL-CBA) means that TBL-augmented BIM can bring high-performance building design, resiliency, and sustainability to smaller and smaller design decisions. Computational design needs a guiding algorithm that aligns with owners, infrastructure users, community, and environmental values. This class will present a comparative study of 5 European hospitals that Brunet Saunier Architecture conducted, based on 45 criteria. We will develop some of these criteria and explain the need to adapt the projects to local cultures. We will also present some of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) management workflows used for the Lariboisière Hospital in Paris (France). We used Revit software to manage the space planning for more than 2,600 hospital rooms. We also used BIM 360 Docs software to collaborate with all the stakeholders (including the owner/operator). In addition, we used Navisworks software to perform coordination during the design phase.

This presentation will focus on the newly developed Topology Optimization technology now being used in Autodesk Nastran In-CAD software and also found in Autodesk Nastran standalone, Fusion 360 Ultimate software, Inventor Simulation software, and Dreamcatcher software. We will begin with an introduction of how Topology Optimization works, and then we'll focus on the Autodesk Nastran In-CAD interface for Topology Optimization. We will perform several examples that will include how to produce designs with minimized mass and maximized stiffness that comply with various design and manufacturing constraints. Examples will include minimized mass with stress and compliance design constraints and various manufacturing constraints such as additive and subtractive with symmetry. We will show a complete workflow that includes importing optimized .STL geometry and building a verification analysis model.

After eliminating the loud combustion engine, we start to hear things like the knocking of the air condition system caused by vibration of fluid flow driven by multipiston pumps. Elimination of this effect leads to fatigue and failures. You’ll learn how to protect your design in Autodesk’s Simulation software. Progress is impossible without changes.
