Building Information Modeling (BIM) planning for builders is inherently difficult. First, BIM planning practices overwhelmingly focus on design modeling despite that the builder is ultimately responsible for critical transitions between design, construction, and turnover. Second, preconstruction and construction typically start well after design BIM planning. Third, conventional architect-owner and owner-contractor contracts limit collaboration between designer and builder. Last, builders do little to none of their own model authoring, leaving implementation of BIM standards to others. Thus builder BIM must be adaptable and pragmatic to manage the standards and practices of cross-disciplinary partners. Skanska Building has developed numerous strategies-both technological and sociological-for executing builder BIM. In this lecture, Skanska Senior Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Manager Pierce Reynoldson will share his insights from 11 years in the industry as builder, designer, and educator.

The class will be a lecture on the EQ house, the actually built architecture that AI and IoT deployed. It was completed in March of 2019. Installed with advanced IoT technology and AI, EQ House is expected to be attached by the owner as if it were life-like architecture. It is installed with varied sensors to perceive environmental status and accumulates data about the owner’s preference by means of “like” buttons from the smart watch. The experimental design, inspection, and fabrication process was also needed to actually realize the futuristic architecture of the EQ House. By using the optimization process, the design period to determine the pattern of the facade decreased by 60% and through the inspection using BIM 360 Docs software and mixed reality decreased 20%, and the fabrication by 25%.

This class will provide an overview of BIM implementation on one of the world's largest projects, the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks project which includes two massive lock facilities - one on the Atlantic side and another on the Pacific - each with three chambers and complex mechanical and electrical systems for locking Neo-Panamax vessels.BIM technology was used to manage the design and construction of this complex project.What if we started the Panama Canal Expansion today, with the dramatic advances in BIM that have occurred in only the last few years? With InfraWorks - which was not available during the planning phase - we can propose site design and road layout with GIS information. With Revit Parts - which was not available during the design phase - we can slice a model easily with sketch lines to produce the lift models for the concrete pouring sequence.With BIM 360 cloud services - also newly available - we can work better across regions and continents for design collaboration.Integrating these BIM tools with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies, we can now better visualize our design during the construction process. This presentation will present a "what if" scenario, to study how the design of this mega-project would proceed today, and to propose a new design template for the future.

As a general contractor, quality control of building layout and verification is necessary to minimize the risk of rework and additional costs or schedule delays. When establishing site control to implement the use of total stations, the team will need to work through a number of challenges and prerequisites. General contractors will need to understand the risk of taking or not taking this responsibility or transferring the risk to third-party quality assurance / quality control teams. Buy-in from the project team and enforcing trades to work on the same controls across a site is important to consistency in layout and verifications. Capitalizing on Revit software for the field is the key to fully implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) in the construction industry. By examining some landmark projects—such the Miami All Aboard Station, Hard Rock Hollywood, and other projects—attendees will learn the importance of fully modeling outside conditions, cranes, formwork, and other construction-related activities to understand constructability and how this impacts costs and schedules. Bringing the models to the field does not stop at coordination, and by correctly modeling how work is placed and utilizing parameters, modelers can provide extremely detailed quantities and approaches to the field and estimating at a subcontractor level. This class will show you how to use BIM 360 Docs software as your published documents portal, and how to get your approved drawings from Vault Professional software to BIM 360 Docs—where external consumers can access it through the BIM 360 Docs web portal or a mobile device. We’ll walk through configuring Vault Project Sync to publish files to BIM 360 Docs, as well as configuring BIM 360 Docs to ensure that only the right people get access to the files. Construction is still one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, with job sites being complex networks of people, equipment, and activity that are dangerous and ever changing. With continued pressured to drive more value to clients, how do project teams use technology to improve productivity while maintaining safe working conditions? Skanska sought to answer this question and has piloted the use of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based technology called real-time location systems (RTLS) to dynamically track people and assets in order to make our job sites smarter, safer, and more productive. This presentation will focus on how RTLS can enhance environmental awareness and real-time visibility of worker’s safety and productivity on active job sites, as well as into operations. A lot of different applications produce a lot of data related to each other, and have to be managed with a reliable solution. During this class, we will take you on a journey of how to support the demands of the project teams based on collaboration and data management, and how to pick the right direction for your project needs. We will share this information based on the experiences at the largest lock in the world (OpenIJ), which is now in the construction phase in The Netherlands.
