3ds Max software is a mature 3D digital content creation package, widely used in the video game industry and by numerous television and visual effects studios. And it is a standard in design and architectural visualization. With the recent addition and democratization of the Arnold renderer, creating stunning imagery and video has never been more accessible. Arnold now brings the visual quality of Hollywood blockbuster movies back home to 3ds Max. In this session, you’ll learn how to import any CAD models in 3ds Max. Then, we’ll show how to create and edit shaders and build realistic lighting setup in an interactive environment. Next, we’ll see how to capitalize on out-of-the-box features to bring your designs to life, such as 3ds Max Fluids to simulate physically accurate liquids and nCloth to generate realistic fabric type objects. Saipem is a large, international turnkey contractor in the oil and gas industry. One of the main problems the firm faced was the complex communication between projects’ stakeholders and the need for harmonizing data independently by the software used. In the past years, several initiatives were implemented to overcome these limitations trying to save time and facilitate the decision-making process, but no efficient solution was found. With the Forge platform the game is changing! A “data-centered BIM (Building Information Modeling) dashboard” has been implemented to aggregate data coming from different sources (SmartPlant Foundation, Oracle, Navisworks, and so on) and present them in the model context. During this session, we will present the benefits of the implemented solution, where BIM has been introduced in traditional workflows, with particular emphasis on how the new tool helps Saipem managers, and discipline leads make quicker decisions, improving project delivery quality, while cloud technology provides access from any device.

Have you ever heard someone in your office say, That's the BIM guy's job, not mine.? The role of BIM in construction is changing. Soon BIM will be ubiquitous across all of our operations. Currently, most third-party training materials focus on the complete package of tools within the software. Many times this training revolves around the key strokes that are needed to achieve outcomes as designed by the software manufacturer, but fails to meet the specific necessities of the contractor. Instead, we need to adapt our training strategy to focus on how BIM integrates into our current project delivery workflows. By educating our personnel on the process first, we can then break down the technical content to support the idea of just-in-time training. In this roundtable session, we share experiences and lessons learned through our efforts to motivate and influence adoption of model-based project delivery within our operations groups, and we also share examples of ways to track enterprise-level progress.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) integration in MEP designs streamlines project delivery by introducing a sophisticated plan early in the process. BIM is redefining MEP integration by resulting in material cost savings and decreased production time that translates into further cost savings. MEP integration on a BIM platform streamlines material procurement, which ensures that material estimation is reliable and that production cost is saved by avoiding over-ordering. In this class, we will explain how MEP contractors can use BIM in MEP integration to get a bird's eye view of different segments, right from the ceiling elevations, to the plumbing layout, and through other MEP systems. We will focus on exploring how BIM is redefining integrated MEP design and ensuring reduced production costs. Also, we will discuss how integrating different analysis software with the intelligent model is revolutionizing MEP integration.

Join me in a demonstration on workflows and best practices as we explore BIM 360 Design Collaboration, BIM 360 document Management and Revit to show how these products work together to facilitate grand designs. This is the story of how DPR Construction, along with its design and building-owner partners, was able to successfully implement BIM 360 Docs software as a project collaboration solution on the VCU Health Children’s Hospital project in Richmond, Virginia. Thanks to the growing number of features included with BIM 360 Docs, the team was able to eliminate or integrate the use of more than a dozen design and construction applications traditionally used by the various team members. This talk will discuss the decision that the team made in early 2017 to go with BIM 360, and will chronicle the peaks and valleys the team overcame on their journey to successful implementation. The talk will include insight into the benefits of using BIM 360 Docs on a large project with many stakeholders, including how the team utilized the software for file sharing, model collaboration, design reviews, and drawing management. We’ll conclude with a discussion on future processes the team has planned as the project moves from design into construction.

One of the first issues owners face at the onset of a project is deciding on which project delivery method to use. Design-bid-build is slowly going extinct, especially for large, complicated projects with challenging schedules. Construction management at risk (CMAR) is a more attractive method, even though it doesn’t quite describe how we work. Design-build is on the rise, but many owners still feel like they’re paying a premium by preselecting the team. Lastly, integrated project delivery (IPD) leaves a lot to be desired, as most of the owners are still not willing to share the risk but expect the benefits. So, if none of those methods align with how we work, what does the future of project delivery look like? A Project BIM Execution Plan (BExP) is more than just a document; it is the common language that becomes the roadmap for digital collaboration, strategy and deliverables. Sure, the average BExP will define the basics. But what good are the BExP outputs without a well-defined information exchange process? With the continuous evolution of platform integrations directly into native BIM environments, why do we assume all project participants know these new workflows and protocols? Enter cloud-based technology planning. Late engagement and undefined workflows set up your project for failure and reduce the likelihood of choosing the best workflows. Cloud-based technology and early collaboration between designer and builder have put a spotlight on expeditious kickoff meetings for successful BIM Execution. New technology now enables early sharing of information and greatly impacts cross-discipline collaboration and risk mitigation. In this class, we’ll examine project-specific BExPs and Information Exchange Diagrams to highlight where project impacts can be avoided through proper cloud-based collaboration planning. From Project Conception to Building Handover, you’ll leave with tangible examples of how to setup your project stakeholders for collaborative success.

Whilst cloud-based platforms like BIM360 powerfully connect project teams and data, this very ability to connect in real time – with decisions and actions made based on the connected information – brings a host of potential unintended and avoidable misunderstandings, increased liability and risks. E.g. who is responsible for errors/corruption in data accessed by external parties? Is the party hosting the platform responsible for misuse of the platform and data in it? What obligations do parties accessing the BIM360 or other platform have to the hosting party? This is an expensive ticking time-bomb of liability and disputes waiting to happen. However, there are presently no resources or practical advices on how to mitigate/avoid such issues or how to explain them to your lawyers so they can help you avoid the risks. In this class, you will be given practical, useful advice and tips on how to reduce risk and clarify parties’ rights and obligations via clear process, guidance and terms.

In the spring of 2018, Autodesk introduced BIM 360 Design software, based on the Forge platform, and BIM 360 Document Management. While users still have access to the legacy BIM 360 Team technology, BIM 360 Design provides enhanced collaboration workflows, greater control over file permissions, and much tighter integration with BIM 360 Docs software for use in "downstream" collaboration workflows during a project’s postdesign phases. This class will focus on the enhanced workflows possible with Design Collaboration and Revit cloud collaboration, and will cover project setup, teams and permissions, and the use of packages to effectively control when others have access to your data and when data from other teams is updated in your model. We will also look at common troubleshooting techniques and BIM 360 site setup.

The handoff between project engineers and fabricators is a key juncture in project delivery. Any mistakes at this stage can mean costly rework and project delays, and an inefficient handoff of design data can bloat budgets and unnecessarily extend project schedules—leading to cost over runs, litigation, and unnecessary headaches for owners. The Autodesk-sponsored Engineering Executive Council explains how improvements to the current situation will benefit project owners—improve project quality, reduce costs, speed up timelines—and offer some initial solutions. The Council will present customer stories of “best practices” to owners followed by a discussion on how to put them into practice. An example will be The Engineering Research Center at Brown University which utilized integrated project delivery (IPD) with cloud-based BIM (Building Information Modeling) technologies (BIM 360 Design software and Revit software) which resulted in a 90% cost reduction and 20% time savings. The project was delivered within budget and two months early.

Brown University School of Engineering is a true IPD (integrated project delivery) project in the United States. BuroHappold Engineering and KieranTimberlake, along with Shawmut Design and Construction and their trade partners, created a plan that would involve complete live collaboration between all parties utilizing Collaboration for Revit cloud service. This involved all parties working in a live model environment while developing their design. Trade partners would be simultaneously coordinating all building systems in preparation for construction. Developing a seamless transition from design to construction model was an opportunity. The team was able to design in Revit software while creating content that was ready for fabrication. The process continued through construction using BIM 360 Glue software for final conflict resolution and then onto BIM Field 360 software, ensuring coordinated installation of all services. You will learn best practices and optimum setup enabling smooth movement of data from team to team and platform to platform for all project scales.
