Much of the building industry still requires and relies upon CAD-based and sheet-centric project information delivery. The National Building Information Modeling Standard-United States (NBIMS-US) doesn't define graphical standards, so the United States National CAD Standard (NCS) is an indispensable reference standard for the foreseeable future. Several changes have occurred in the NCS and NBIMS for versions releasing in late 2014. NCS V6 has added a new Building Information Modeling (BIM) Implementation Section, and there are ongoing efforts to further develop new content. This round table gives attendees an overview of the new section and the opportunity to participate in further development. Attendees will identify common business challenges that the National Standards can alleviate and they will develop a list of effective practices to help make project delivery consistent throughout the building industry. We will make content from this session available to attendees, and it will become a basis for revision ballots to the National Standards.

A new metro Line, with 19 kilometers and encompassing 15 stations, a maintenance yard, and 2 primary substations, represents a landmark achievement in utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM). A large-scale infrastructure project has set a new benchmark for the industry by implementing a comprehensive BIM (Building Information Modeling) approach, encompassing all disciplines, including geotechnical engineering and laser scanning for connection stations with existing lines. The project has also standardized data using IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) and introduced a new standard for contractual items, including a new contractual measurement method. Automated analyses have been integrated into robotic processes, and a train dynamic models to ensure equipment installations has been utilized and with data management. These innovations have significantly enhanced project quality and established the project as a national reference.

This class will introduce the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) software as a construction-safety planning platform. We will introduce some effective practices and advantages of using BIM to identify potential safety hazards, find mitigation procedures, and prevent hazards in construction planning. We will show you how to connect a construction-safety database with BIM software, and we'll cover how the software can assist safety personnel to inquire about safety knowledge and conduct job hazard analysis efficiently. We will also show you several examples of actual projects that used BIM for safety planning and hazard prevention.

When looking at case studies and success stories that demonstrate how construction projects have implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM), the project values are at least $30 million, and they usually run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. This does not address the numerous projects that are much smaller and still require detailed coordination efforts. This class will look at using BIM and virtual design and construction (VDC) on smaller projects, as well as explore the tips and tricks that our firm has learned using BIM on smaller projects, including projects valued at less than $10 million.

Discuss how to combine logic, geometry, math, and BIM (Building Information Modeling) with Dynamo visual programming. We’ll use Dynamo to drive a Revit document and interoperate with other applications, data sources, and modeling tools. If you already have some experience with Revit and are looking to expand its capabilities with computation, this workshop is for you. In this long-format hands-on lab, we’ll introduce you to the basics of using Dynamo for Revit. We’ll explore how the two tools interface; the basics of building a Dynamo graph; and the logic, form, and structure of graphs—and we’ll help you understand how to apply what you’ve learned to your own solutions after the workshop. A basic understanding of Revit software and computer programming and scripting is helpful, but not required.

We have spent the past several years institutionalizing the standards and processes required to establish a 'To Be Maintained' Building Information Modeling (BIM) Revit software model and link this Revit software model to a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). The prevalent thinking was that this 'BIM-to-CMMS' milestone was the ultimate BIM goal for an owner. Today we see that it is just the beginning of capitalizing on BIM in many areas of the facility lifecycle, and we understand that the owner expects the existence of the BIM to deliver measureable value in the operation and maintenance of the facility. Our panel will focus on the emerging uses of BIM after the completion of the Revit software model. We will discuss how you can utilize the model in asset management, real estate management, and building automation and performance optimization, as well as how the model impacts the total cost of facility ownership.

Most of the firms making decisions about Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementations are more focused on the technology, as well as what software to use, how much to pay the BIM manager, and how much to pay for infrastructure—and the firms take for granted that everyone will be very excited and all over the models. Well, I have bad news: not everyone will. You need a very well-studied strategic implementation plan regarding the human side, the collaboration, and the new processes. In this lecture I will show these difficulties divided by specific groups of stakeholders, and we'll cover some analysis and strategy around them based on real experiences in the matter. Having an integrated and motivated team is more efficient than having excellent technology without cooperation.
