Early BIM workflows rarely included actual building product data and families. As our technology grows and matures it is becoming more important to move from the “Building Models” (BM) that we started with and add more and more “I” so that we take full advantage of “Building Information Modeling” (BIM). Who better to provide this information than the companies that actually manufacture the products we use in our design. Building Product Manufactures (BPM’s) were mostly left out of the BIM party during the early stages of our transition from 2D to BIM, but now they are slowly being incorporated into our models. So the question is how we best welcome them into our party to benefit the entire design build team. This class will discuss strategies, topics, and tools that help the entire design build team to realize the true power of virtual design.

While it's common knowledge that additive manufacturing (AM) has become an integral tool in product development, it can be difficult to know how to fit AM into your workflow. In this talk, we'll discuss how to effectively use AM to accelerate product development and prepare designs to ramp up to production. We will include an overview of the common additive technologies and materials currently used by product designers, and look at the advantages and disadvantages of each from a product development perspective. Building on this overview, we'll discuss example workflows and case studies where additive manufacturing was used effectively to reduce time to market and mitigate process and design risk.

For today's architects to meet their ambitious sustainability goals toward net zero, new building materials that can sequester carbon emissions and replace petroleum-based products must rapidly enter the construction industry. In this session, we'll look at a case study where leaders in industrialized construction, composite manufacturing, and biomaterials technology joined Autodesk researchers. Together, they developed a carbon sequestering facade system by replacing the typical petroleum-based foam within fiberglass reinforced facade panels with mycelium fungi composites, a carbon-negative biomaterial. The session will describe the developmental journey from material research and performance validation to the use of Autodesk Forma and Autodesk Fusion 360 software to design the facade for a Californian housing development that meets sustainability, habitability, and construction project goals. The future of designing and making buildings is at a tipping point, and a significant paradigm shift is not far away. Net zero is acting as the catalyst for radical change, and change—enabled by the shift toward off-site manufacturing and the availability of a raft of digital technologies and tools—is happening rapidly. This talk will look at the work of WSP's digital innovation team, and consider how to adopt designing for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) approaches where economies of scale align with configurators to drive product-orientated workflows and new customer experiences. Within this workflow, kits of parts and catalogues become crucial to the success of repeatable content, while enabling individual projects to create their own identities within circular economy approaches where longevity and replacement of larger subassemblies become commonplace. The case studies we present will underline all of these aspects.

This course will present inventive techniques and methods, using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the review of the building envelope. A key focus of the presentation will be the highlighting of how structural systems interact with the enclosure system. It will focus on topics such as the Level of Development (LOD) of architectural models and structural design models and how these progress into fabrication-level models for the building envelope in products such as Inventor software and Revit Architecture software with the structural system, interacting with products such as Revit Structure software and Advance Steel software. Key areas of this will be looking at localized high-level-of-development models around transitions of buildings, and will show how systems are brought together and used in a building-enclosure review meeting, as well as the importance of integrating both structure and building envelope as holistic systems as part of the review process.

General contractors, like Bouygues Construction, face new challenges: skilled workforce shortages and a need for sustainability engagement (carbon footprint reduction) and high quality. Compared to the manufacturing industry, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has been struggling to improve productivity for years. To tackle these challenges, we need to transform our ways of working by going beyond building information modeling (BIM)-expected outcomes. Our dedicated team SmartFabrik embeds engineering methodology as a new approach to construction in functional bricks. These bricks maximize knowledge and know-how management (from all actors at all steps). Through this new modularity, we can produce deliverables that meet the jobsite's actual needs and requirements. This process is a foundation of Building 4.0, moving from multitrade on-site activities to modules and tasks' assembly. The as-built model is the starting point for the future digital twin. During this class we'll illustrate the approach with the MEP Riser module using Manufacturing Informed Design software.

With the Apple Indoor Maps Program, Apple makes it easy for organizations to easily add indoor maps to apps and websites and enable indoor positioning, all without the need to install beacons. This session will go into detail about the Indoor Program and how Autodesk’s building operations product, BIM 360 Ops, integrates with it.
