Decathlon—the European sporting goods retailer and the most preferred brand in France—looks to the future of design through the lens of generative design and sustainability. Charles Cambianica, advanced design co-leader at Decathlon, presented two years ago on how generative design was helping Decathlon reimagine the bike of the future. Today, his team continues to promote the use of generative design to create new ways of making new products. To help optimize the process, Charles’s project teams decided to use computational design as an exploratory tool. Decathlon wanted to explore how it could use generative design starting in the design phase to shrink the carbon footprint of the thousands of products it manufactures each year.

This hands-on lab will introduce the Fusion 360 3D CAD design app as a design tool for designers and engineers of all skill levels. In this class, we spend some time understanding exactly how these printers work, with a particular emphasis on how a 3D design intent is translated into actual toolpaths. Based on this understanding, you will be able to understand how to manage particular issues that affect printability and strength of parts, such as overhangs, bridges, wall thickness, filament orientation, and more. The class is illustrated with extensive example projects that are in active use in the 3D printing community. With the addition of injection-molding simulation tools and Product Design Extension in Autodesk Fusion 360, there’s the opportunity to take the design of injection-molded components all the way from concept through to design, manufacturing validation and tooling manufacture all without ever leaving Autodesk Fusion 360. So that's what we'll do! We'll follow the whole process from start to finish. Effectively managing these assemblies can be a real challenge for companies with multidisciplinary teams that simultaneously contribute to the project from all Autodesk Fusion 360 workspaces. This technical instruction will provide attendees with techniques and methods to improve their development processes when creating large assemblies. Such methods will include: simplifying into subassemblies, using top-down or bottom-up modeling where appropriate, using the manage extension for data traceability, and simplifying geometry with configurations to reduce the load on the PC.
