Building Information Modeling (BIM) has taken the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry by storm. Architects, engineers, and contractors alike have adopted new technology into their business and adapted their processes to realize a return on investment. Owners, on the other hand, are still struggling to keep pace. AEC firms try to educate owners on the value of BIM, but the things that bring value to design and construction processes may not provide the biggest bangs for owners' bucks. Lifecycle management and facility operations are areas where the real value of BIM will likely reside in the not-to-distant future. This round-table (unconference) discussion gives attendees the opportunity to weigh in on the real value of BIM for owners. These discussions will help steer the way owners require BIM deliverables on future projects so that they can get the most value.

- SLShannon LightfootAs a BIM Manager for McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Shannon is responsible for management and implementation of McCarthy's BIM/VDC initiatives within the Central Division, including establishing BIM/VDC strategy, training field personnel, monitoring BIM project execution, providing support for BIM process improvements, and performing research and development on new BIM technology. My main focus is to help project staff gain efficiency, improve quality, and increase productivity using BIM technology. In the field Shannon gained critical knowledge of the construction industry, and its means and methods as a Project Engineer. This knowledge allows him to provide the best solutions to project challenges.
- DMDave McCoolDave McCool, BIM Director for McCarthy Building Companies, is responsible for the overall management and direction of BIM services for the Southern California division. He also organizes the McCarthy BIM tech committee, which is the guiding coalition for companywide BIM initiatives. Dave promotes a trust-based team on every project and strives to constantly improve the processes (proposal, design management, construction, and facility management) by enhancing them with technology. Since joining McCarthy over 4 years ago, he has contributed to the construction of over $1 billion in healthcare and educational projects. His teamwork and determination have played key roles in leading the company to becoming 'the best builder in America.' Dave has held chair positions for the NBIMS v3 and AIA TAP OC. He has also presented at numerous university and industry events. Currently, he is co-authoring BIM and Construction Management 2nd Edition for Wiley Publishing.
