Digital disruption is an inevitable trend in the construction industry, with many digital technologies creating the future construction sites to be completed in the near future. On the other hand, digital data as the output of digital tech use will gather into a data lake and link with ERP and other core systems to advance data use. Transferring from "creating" and "collecting" digital data—including building information modeling (BIM) data—to the next stage of "using" data will be the must. We’ll present our milestones with the ultimate goal being that executives be able to make data-centered business decisions based on data gathered in real time.

TAKAAKI MIYAUCHI: In this session, "Beyond the Digital Twin," [INAUDIBLE] subtitles, we are going to talk about a problem to realize executive meeting in the command room.

First of all, let us begin with our company introduction with a short video.

TAKAAKI MIYAUCHI: We often hear the words "data-driven." We do work with data as usual. BIM is information. The time has come for BIM to have true integration into a data-centric world.

The theme of today's session, the Executive Meetings in the Command Room. In other words, this is true data-centric management with full use of real-time data to make the best decisions, conduct executive meetings using real-time data in the command room. Not just executive meetings, but all kinds of meeting will be conducted based on data. It refers to observing and integrating BIM to achieve such future.

Why I was convinced that such future world can be achieved-- there were two reasons. One, digital data is incorporated into the construction industry, as usual, to realize the digital value chain. Two, abbreviation with BI2s. Necessary data can be visualized by the person who narrates, sometimes in simplified form. Simple times in details. Sometimes it is details.

This is one answer for digital transformation. By the way, I will explain BIM [INAUDIBLE] that read to a data-centric world, using real time data [INAUDIBLE]

Well, I talked too much before introducing ourselves. My apology. Let us introduce ourselves, then. My name is Takaaki Miyauchi. I am leading the team in charge of Generation Construction Division, in Construction DX Promotional Department, Technology Head to [INAUDIBLE] in Daiwa House.

I like orchestrating that team, arranging the team members' mind into one direction. We are still on the way to transform our way of work between digital-- between design team and the construction team. If some of elements in this session resonate with you, or helpful for you, it is my pleasure.

YOSHINORI SHIMIZU: My name is Yoshinori Shimizu. I moved to Daiwa House for my general contractor in 2017. In total, I have 10 years of field experience in charge of many kinds of buildings. Last year, I was inspired by AU and AU-Japan. I'm striving to create a future of construction on site, through digital transformation.

TAKAAKI MIYAUCHI: Before I get into the main topic, I'd like to touch on the BIM history we have been working on. Our work in BIM is an essential element to achieve a data driven command room.

Through our introduction video of our team, we would like to share how we have been working on BIM.

TAKAAKI MIYAUCHI: Well, let's move on to the main topic-- to realize data driven management using real time information. Where is this problem? I'd like talk about how to establish the command room to achieve a data driven world.

We intensively worked to apply BIM to all projects in Daiwa House. And we have achieved it in design phase. Who has it worked for? And who receives the benefit from it?

Now the keyword DX has become in common use. For whom is DX? It may be a good timing for us to think about it.

We have been promoting DIM, but what is for-- BIM in the beginning? BIM was for design department and construction department, respectively. Design department created the data necessary for design team only. And it was not using in construction team. This is so-called partial optimization.

Later, we noticed the issue on the changes of our perspective to what is required for construction BIM and what overall optimisation is focusing on the data collaboration, even though BIM is digital data only for those involved in the building lifecycle.

On the other hand, let's think about DX. Who is DX for? It has a great impact on decision makers, especially the management level of the company. While BIM was only about information for the entire building lifecycle, with DX, not only information related to BIM but also information from ERP, SCM, and the other cost systems will become necessary elements.

DX also requires only the necessary information is extracted and visualized in an easy to understand manner. In DX, BIM is necessary information. But it is also a part of the [INAUDIBLE].

To achieve DX, BIM data is indispensable. But we also need other information. How does that story relate to the command room? I continue to talk about the command room concept to achieve the data driven management. Fully utilize real time data.

Let's imagine the executive meeting or management meeting. We are not talking about any particular cases, but rather a general situation in large companies. Materials distributed in advance. But as data are collected, result of analysis of the problem. And their experienced board members are making decisions based on information gathered before the meeting today.

Is there any updates-- changes from yesterday? In today's world, we face fast paced changes. Things are happening now we never thought about until yesterday. How can we respond to it? That is the essence of data driven management.

What do we mean by data driven? Decision making by the information gatherers before the meeting day. In terms of using data, this is also data driven management. However, as I said on the previous slide, the situation is often different today than it was yesterday. I believe decisions based on real time information is a data driven management.

We often saw a scene in Hollywood movies when a crisis happens. The President of the United States rush into the command room and takes the necessary information with real time data, and then made a decision. Because BIM is ready to use, we can achieve such a movie world in the construction industry. This is one of the exit strategy for BIM.

ERP and SCM are important data for management to make decisions. In the construction industry, is it sufficient nowadays? BIM is growing to be 7D or 8D today from 3D, 4D, and so on. Shouldn't such data and information be used more effectively?

BIM is not only for building information management, but also important data to be applied to business operations on the various additional makings in the construction industry. We mean command room. It is not only a management meeting, but also an environment necessary for decision making, no matter how large or small.

Extreme weather is impacting around the world due to the global warming, and Japan is no exception. This chance to form a task forces, to respond to such contingency, are also included in the agenda of executive meeting in the command room.

Various simulations with BIM. We have been working in the [INAUDIBLE] design. Planning stage can also be effectively utilized. On the left, Dynamo is used to automatically generate the layout of emergency temporarily facilities. It allows to effectively use limited space around quick reaches to consensus, with many stakeholders to accelerate construction.

The video on the right shows a flood simulation of the construction site using InfraWorks. These are some example use cases where decision makers can make quick decisions with the necessary data, in real time, as a BCP major.

Now, to realize the command room, what kind of steps are required? We prompt three steps to conduct the management meeting in the command room. As a first step, we create a command room of the data from design BIM the data and information collected in the construction site. We call a mini command room.

What can we do with building related information only? We are also planning to work on gap verification against our goal. As a second step, we will consider collecting not only building information, but also data from the court system, crime rate data, and other various data.

We start by identifying the data necessary for management decisions, and then look into the data collaboration. Next, we would like to share some concrete examples of case study of the mini command room. It is one first milestone-- it is our first milestone of this journey. And over to Shimizu-san.

YOSHINORI SHIMIZU: I am a site supervisor, not a member of digital promotion or BIM promotion at headquarters. Myself-- we do not feel stressed about using digital technology. But [INAUDIBLE] was unknown at old site. Since last year, we started to study the use of digital technology on site and how would it work as a mini command room.

This is my command room on site. It may not look as good as the command room in the movie, but I feel it is a big step forward in the construction site.

At my side, we utilize many technologies, including Autodesk products such as Revit, PlanGrid, et cetera. As well as sunrise cameras, we are actively promoting digitalization. In other words, we are digitizing the construction site. We store our existing intuition and experience as digital information.

How have we achieved all that? I will explain what has happened in the data driven site.

First, about the on site survey, we decided to conduct a preliminary survey in a virtual space. We decided to conduct a preliminary survey in a virtual space. Instead of visiting the site many times to check, by using the audit, we could establish a clear picture of the site, investigate checkpoint in advance, and keep records as digital data. This alone has reduced the time required for primary survey by 50%.

Next example is to confirm details with the owner. We used a virtual model created in Revit to confirm details with the client. By check and confirm details requested by the owner with a realistic model, not only do you think that [INAUDIBLE], but also improving customer satisfaction. We are further including the effects from compilation model by increasing the case study of compilations using the virtual model.

Another example, by using PlanGrid and Autodesk Build. We digitized safety management, site patrol records, and construction patrols. Digitalizing computational operations alone had a significant effect. But also, it is due to the increase in digital stock. Increasing the number of digital stock on site will accelerate the data utilization and lead to the data driven world.

Finally, an example of Autodesk Build used for project management. Perhaps this could be the most obvious example of a data driven construction site. By connecting the information with people on site, project management is conducted. Collaborating with the process information, project progress can be managed based on data.

That is the current state of digitalization of construction site. Simply by utilizing data from game models and digitizing of construction site, we can achieve the data driven construction site. We help people make decisions based on their time table. We are promoting work style reforms on construction sites by using digital technology.

I'd like to contribute to achieve the final command room, understanding what kind of effects this did will have on management.

We have utilized digital data in construction sites to some extent. Not just about utilizing it-- if we can change our mindset to have some image of data driven construction site, then what is missing? This can be utilized. Such kind of awareness, we can find so many things.

Now, let's move on to step two. Step two requires BIM and [INAUDIBLE] collaborating with other core systems.

We are working with Autodesk on a concept for this part of the project. We are running during the construction of a digital platform with ERP, SCM, and other mission critical systems. Also, we are considering a way to visualize data on our dashboard, extracting the necessary information from the data rate.

As a first step, we studied [INAUDIBLE] BIM and databases through archivist project, currently ongoing in maintenance management. Through this project, we are looking for some crew for data integration. We also feel [INAUDIBLE] will become to play more and more important role in the future.

We entered into the partnership with Autodesk and are working on several important initiatives to achieve the command room. Among them, we focus on a project to realize the data brain using the DfMA concept for the next generation of industrialization of construction.

ROBERT VAN BELLEN: Hello, I'm Robert from Ireland, Consulting Manager at Autodesk. As you've heard from our previous speakers, Daiwa House and Autodesk have built a strong and long standing relationship to drive and accelerate Daiwa House digital transformation agenda.

But it's only since the beginning of 2021 that we started working closely together on what we now call the evolution of industrialized construction. Taking all of these opportunities, but also the identified internal process and mindset barriers for design for manufacturing and assembly and industry construction into account, Daiwa House and Autodesk developed three primary goals for the digital excellence program for DfMA and IC.

First, we want to create frictionless collaboration, enabling seamless and streamlined communication across the full lifecycle. Second, we want to enable flexible configuration, supporting the philosophy of customer centered design while maximizing the amount of reusability of components. Third, we want to develop smarter buildings and to add intelligence to the production process and leverage AI and robotics.

To realize these goals, we are working closely together to develop Daiwa House Digital Brain-- a data powered analytics collaboration and decision making platform. In short, a digital brain is a nexus for continuous automated learning from data across all business units, departments, product lines, and services that give the organization higher intellect.

The creation of the Daiwa House Digital Brain begins with the formation of microservices where the company's application architecture is organized as a bundle of services that continuously improves and grows and learns and works to predict specific outcomes. In this process, it is of utmost importance to connect the dots between the various business units and to break down silos to align business goals.

This is a critical piece, and most often where companies fall short. With a digital brain, Daiwa House is armed with greater self-awareness and interdisciplinary thinking to drive radically new convergent business models. The lifeblood of the digital brain is data accumulated over the phases of the asset lifecycle.

With Daiwa's next generation industrialized construction platform, Daiwa House is moving towards harnessing real time data that's accessible throughout the entire organization, not just in silos. This means looking at what the different use cases for streaming data, and building the right models, and finding how the business can use and benefit from the information in a completely different way than they've done before.

The next generation of industrialized construction project, utilizing the digital brain is one of the important steps to achieve real time data driven management. Transformation enabling data-centric decision making in management meetings, contingency planning, or risk management, to utilizing accumulated data in real time. Daiwa House and Autodesk are working together on DX in the construction industry with such an ultimate goal.

Now, let me summarize today's session BIM is an information we need to make data driven decisions. Looking at the evolutionary trends of information technology and thinking about the secondary use of BIM. To put it another way, it is an exit strategy of BIM. We positioned it as one of our goals to conduct executive meeting in the command room. To achieve this goal as a step one, we have studied a command room experiment at the building lifecycle level, utilizing BIM. After some time, to prepare for the step two to link between BIM and databases, we have studied demonstrated priors in the maintenance management phase. This will lead to reengage with various ERPs finally.

The bottom right is as BIM is becoming the norm, what do we want to achieve after? BIM level 1 to 2 or level 2 to 3? And then what happens? What is the exit strategy for BIM? Once we complete digital [INAUDIBLE] what is it effectively for?

For whom has BIM been promoted? Is BIM only used in the lifecycle of the building? Will BIM and the evolution of IT [INAUDIBLE] each other? Will BIM become an important element for the client and the cause of company's management?
