This class will explain the fundamentals of laser scanning, explore its value and application in building construction, and reveal how reality-capture tools are shaping the future of the industry. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of what data is collected and how, typical scan-data processing workflows in ReCap software, and analysis for ASTM E1155 Concrete Floor Flatness & Levelness (FF/FL) reporting. We will share best practices for capturing data in the field; accurate and precise scan registration to ensure reliable results; and several examples of actual projects where ReCap software was used to enhance processes and communication. This session features ReCap.

As an expert in construction technology I help our teams and partners leverage technology to enhance how we procure, plan and execute construction projects. In my role as Southwest Virtual Design & Construction Director I am responsible for supporting implementation of various construction technologies including building information modeling (BIM), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), laser scanning, aerial UAV photography, 360 photography. We integrate technology within proven construction methods to enhance the building process, improve construction quality, and provide predictable results for our partners and clients.
  • Philip Lorenzo
    Philip Lorenzo runs Rithm, a company dedicated to software and process innovation in reality capture. He has developed software that helps open the doors of mass-market adoption of scanning by enabling companies to create deliverables throughout the construction process. He works as a consultant and trainer for large general contractors across the United States regarding the in-house execution of 3D scanning on projects ranging from $350 million to $2.4 billion in value. Philip actively works to standardize scanning in construction, and he’s an active committee member of the U.S. Institute of Building Documentation (USIBD) Level of Assurance (LOA) specification, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E57 and 1155, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and he has served as an instructor for the United Association as an expert on reality capture. Philip also serves as a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to founding Rithm Philip worked as a virtual design and construction (VDC) engineer at McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., where his team won Fiatech's CETI award for innovation in reality capture. Philip holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
