Part I: Asset Handover from Autodesk BIM 360 Field

The end is getting near. Punchlist items are being closed. The team is drawing down.

So how are you going to close the project out and hand over equipment information currently stored in BIM 360 Field?

Paper? A thumb-drive?

What if there was a mobile-first asset and maintenance management solution that makes sharing equipment information easy? Would it help if it is free for you to use? Fortunately, there is. It’s BIM 360 Ops.

To help you to create more value for your customers at handover, here’s how we recommend you prepare your BIM 360 Field equipment data.

First, use the standard BIM 360 Field properties whenever possible.

The BIM 360 Field equipment Name should be the identifier that the FM team will use to refer to the piece of equipment. The Description should clearly indicate what the piece of equipment is.

The BIM 360 Field Type will become the assets’ Category used for grouping as well as assigning to trades, vendors, or shops.

Standard properties such as barcode, serial number, install date and warranty end date will be mapped to the corresponding BIM 360 Ops properties.

We recommend creating two specific BIM 360 Field custom properties: Manufacturer and Model. These will be mapped to the corresponding Details fields in BIM 360 Ops.

Any other standard or custom properties that you create will be added to the end of the asset record Details.

PDFs, photos and videos that are added to BIM 360 Field equipment as file attachments or library references are brought to the BIM 360 Ops document and image galleries. For the sake of the operations team, please attach the O&M manual and perhaps the warranty documentation. The rest can be archived elsewhere.

As a best practice, we recommend exporting one asset initially to validate your results. To select equipment in BIM 360 Field for export you need to filter the equipment using the search feature. Checking the boxes will not filter the equipment. Once you have filtered the equipment, go to More Actions > Export to BIM 360 Ops and paste the BIM 360 Field export code found on the Building Information page.

That’s all there is to it. Give it a try and see how happy your customers can be.
