Autodesk University will be a new experience this year as we leave Las Vegas behind and go virtual. It’s been exciting to see all the hard work by our customers and fellow Autodeskers to make this event a success—and the best part? AU is completely free to attend. We realize this will be the first AU for many of you—and for those who have attended in the past, it may feel like new. For this reason, we wanted to share our top picks for sessions pertaining to structural design, engineering, and fabrication. Here’s what you won’t want to miss:
Concrete Rebar Sessions: Rebar Detailing with Revit
One of the best-kept secrets about Revit is that it can do rebar detailing. A big reason for this is the talent of our ecosystem of industry partners who customize Revit for regional code requirements and engineering practices. Engineering firms are already seeing the benefits – Caulmert and Scott Hughes Design in the UK use the Naviate apps for Revit to automate rebar shop drawings and produce 3D clash-free rebar models. Engineering powerhouses like Hotchief see the benefits of using SOFiSTiK’s rebar detailing solution for Revit to better integrate design and detailing. At this year’s AU, you have the opportunity to hear the latest rebar detailing capabilities from two other industry partners: Graitec and CADS.
You can learn more about these sessions, titled: RebarCAD 3D: A BIM Tool for 3D Rebar Detailing and Revision Management in Revit, here and Enhance Rebar Detailing with Revit and Graitec Powerpack, here.
Webinar: Connection Design Automation with IDEA StatiCa
If you are a steel fabricator, detailer, or structural engineer that designs steel connections, you’ll want to attend this special webinar. Autodesk’s AEC Industry Partner IDEA StatiCa will be showcasing their patented connection analysis and design solutions and how they integrate with Autodesk Revit and Advance Steel. Their new connection automation solution is hot off the press and they will show how engineers can automate connection design for both simple and complex connections.

Structural Analysis Session: SOFiSTiK integration with Revit
As we’ve met with structural engineers across the globe, the one thing they keep asking for is better interoperability between BIM and their preferred structural analysis engines. At this year’s AU, engineers should be intrigued to see what Autodesk and industry partner SOFiSTiK are doing to respond to this need. This class will demonstrate how engineers can do all their structural analysis and design within Revit, but powered by their trusted analysis and design engines. It is also a great fit for those who are doing early-stage analysis including load take-down calculations. Engineering firms are already using this solution like EBP, Thomas Lorenz, and IDK, so we look forward to the response we get from the broader structural community.

Industry Talk: Structural Optimization That Architects Don’t Hate
One class that we look forward to about collaboration is this structural optimization session. The presenters will show how structural engineers can use optimization tools like generative design to better collaborate with architects and set clearer expectations for what’s possible and what’s not. The use of AI-based design methods is gaining traction in the structural engineering realm and more firms are exploring the use of tools like computational design or even machine learning to automate out repetitive tasks and identify errors or potential risk areas in their designs. They are using generative design to explore design options more quickly and while optimizing them around all the factors that need to be considered. Sustainability Sessions: Structural Engineering for Mitigating Climate Change
One of the most important design problems facing the structural profession over the next decade is how we mitigate the impact of climate change, where structural engineers are in a unique position to be stewards of our built environment. Many structural engineers are already thinking about total carbon impact in their designs, especially how to reduce embodied carbon in construction. Whether choosing carbon friendly materials like Carbon Cure or better optimizing out material and waste, engineers must understand how design decisions can decarbonize the construction site. This topic will be front and center at AU. Be sure to check out all of the AEC on-demand content, including our Sustainability session to learn more about the latest workflows, tools, and betas available for more sustainable design practice.
