AutoCAD 2017 enhancements to the HPLAYER system variable enable you to create a new drawing layer and set it as the AutoCAD hatch layer, all in a single operation. The HPLAYER system variable was introduced, in AutoCAD 2011, so you could specify an existing layer on which you could create new hatches and fills, regardless of the current layer.
