The AEC Excellence Awards 2020 is now accepting applications for technology innovators around the globe. Co-sponsored by Informed Infrastructure and the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), this annual event is in its ninth year and bigger than ever before.
This competition does more than just honor the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) practices that drive the industry; it showcases incredible people and projects that signal what’s to come for the future of the industry. By celebrating the people and teams who are often behind the scenes, we shed light on their imaginative solutions and inspire even more professionals to push their limits.
Last year's winners included the global masterpieces like the Chase Center in San Francisco, an urban renewal project in Hong Kong, a metro line in Istanbul, and a residential development in the United Kingdom. The AEC Excellence Awards even recognized a groundbreaking, sustainable Swedish research facility that will be the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source once complete.
This year, we'll be putting more emphasis on creative uses of technology and innovation. The Innovator of the Year award was created for the pioneers in their field, the people who are adopting emerging technology to improve the efficiency of cities everywhere.
The AEC Excellence Awards 2019 named Amr Raafat, Vice President of VDC and Technology at Windover Construction, the Innovator of the Year. As he put it, "technology for me is a mix between data processing, how we handle the data in an innovative way and how we make all of these different technologies work together in harmony to offer real time solutions on our jobsites." Raafat's mix of creative thinking plus practical application earned him the recognition he deserved for developing smarter (and ultimately more productive) buildings.

In previous years, other AEC Excellence Awards winners have made impressive use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to create original and sustainable homes, hospitals, and schools. For instance, a 2017 honoree, Geotectura, deployed Autodesk solutions to achieve a LEED Platinum certification for the Porter School of Environmental Studies in Tel Aviv.
