How Moving from 2D to 3D Modeling Saved Skanska Time & Money During Preconstruction

skanska saved time money in preconstruction

Skanska is a world leader in construction and project development in select markets throughout the Nordic region, Europe, and USA. Driven by its values of safety, sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and community, Skanska wants to contribute to a better society and provide innovative, sustainable solutions for both simple and complex projects in the commercial, civil, and industrial markets.

Kelsey Stein, National Preconstruction Technology Manager at Skanska, shares how going from 2D to 3D modeling for quantity takeoff using Autodesk Construction Cloud™ during preconstruction has saved time and money on projects.

“One of the biggest challenges that we face when moving from 2D to 3D is the pushback that we receive from traditional ways of doing estimation,” says Stein. “By having better standards that we can give to the design team, it’s helped us perform closer estimation, while saving time and money on our projects.”

Watch how Autodesk Construction Cloud is helping Skanska provide greater value to clients through greater constructability, safety, and sustainability.

Kelsey Stein, National Preconstruction Technology Manager at Skanska: Skanska is an international construction company headquartered in Sweden. We have building, civil, and commercial development divisions. Technology aligns perfectly with Skanska's vision for a better world by increasing collaboration and communication between all parties, the design team, the subcontractors, and the construction manager.

Our partnership with Autodesk helped us implement our digital strategy by providing training, troubleshooting, and project support. This was especially useful with scaling up Assemble to being able to use it in most preconstruction offices.

One of the biggest challenges that we face when moving from 2D to 3D is the pushback that we receive from traditional ways of doing estimation. A great way we have overcome this is by proving the value of the tool through real life cases.

One case study that we had, was where we did a traditional 2D takeoff, and then we did a 3D takeoff using Assemble. In the 3D take off, it [curtain wall scope] was 28% larger than the 2D takeoff. And of course, the instant reaction was that, "Oh, this 3D model is incorrect. We can't use these values. 2D is correct.” By digging deeper, we found that those quantities had been missed in 2D, and they were correct in the 3D model. This saved us an enormous amount of money that we would've been out if we had followed the traditional 2D method.

By using Autodesk we've been able to save time and cost by reducing the amount of time that we spend quantifying a model, then that in turn saves us money on the project. We're also able to add greater value to the project and provide value to the client because we're spending less time counting and measuring. Whereas now we can look at very important issues on the project that make it better like constructability, safety, sustainability, and that's what really makes projects great.
