Our first Water Talk of the new year, Can Your Water Distribution Model Handle the Pressure?, talked about how you can properly differentiate customer water use from water leakage in water distribution models.
Before the event began, we asked participants to weigh in on a few subjects. First, it’s clear that a lot of people are losing a lot of water to leaks.
Second, quite a few attendees were not familiar with emitters – or haven’t really used them.
These people showed up to the right event. During the talk, Felipe Hernández did the math for us to show the process of differentiating between real water demand and a leak using InfoWater Pro.
So what are emitters, anyway? Emitters attempt to simulate any type of hole in a system through which water can escape (or even intrude) from (or into) pipes. With emitters, you could emulate hydrants, for example, but in this Water Talk we’re simulating fissures, holes, imperfect fittings — things like that. These cause background leakage. In InfoWater Pro, you can input emitter coefficients, and we show you a relatively simple way to estimate these coefficients so you can include them in your models and have a logical representation of leakage in your networks.
