Optimatics, a Suez company that grew out of a successful Australian consultancy, wants to get their infrastructure planning software into the hands of as many water managers around the world as possible. We know how they feel. We want engineers to look to InfoWorks ICM and InfoWorks WS Pro whenever they need the power of hydraulic modeling simulation to see into future possibilities and inform their decision making.
For seven years now, Optimatics customers have been utilizing InfoWorks apps and the Exchange API to connect their hydraulic models to Optimizer software to create workflows they can rely on regularly to solve their network planning challenges. Giving our shared customers the ability to unlock these workflows using our Exchange API has resulted in shared growth in the number of customers of both Optimatics and Autodesk, and it’s helped make the work of our water professional customers more accurate and efficient.
We expect more and more water professionals to adopt this data-driven hydraulic modeling way of working going forward, which is why we’ve recently strengthened our partnership with Optimatics, who offer InfoWorks ICM and InfoWorks WS Pro to their clients.
“Optimatics is excited for its new industry partnership with Autodesk,” says Optimatics CEO Joshua Cantone. “Autodesk InfoWorks ICM and InfoWorks WS Pro software are the best in class and we are excited to provide our customers a more scalable and seamless integration with our Optimizer software.”
How Optimatics and Autodesk water customers work together
A great example of how our shared customers combine our software is when engineers or consultants want to solve a difficult CSO problem. Before they even begin, they know they will want to test as many potential alternative strategy components as possible to attempt to solve the issue. They might want to upsize a conveyance here, add more storage or pumps there, or institute new RTCs everywhere, which they can do inside InfoWorks ICM for stormwater and wastewater networks or InfoWorks WS Pro for water distribution networks.
Each of the many scenarios they create – whether only a handful or a few hundred – has a cost/benefit analysis associated with it evaluated within the analysis. The Optimizer software can significantly reduce the trial-and-error grunt-work and help turn those hundreds of alternative options into tens or hundreds of thousands of specific network configurations and corresponding model simulations, all with the goal of finding the absolute best solution for any particular project by automating the scenario analysis process.
Watch the Water Talk with Optimatics
This CSO use case is one that we illustrated in a Water Talk, Expanding the value of your integrated catchment models with Optimizer, which also features Jacobs Program Manager Tom Heinemann walking through the experience of helping the City of Omaha optimize their InfoWorks ICM model. They do an excellent job of explaining how these two pieces of software can inform long-term planning decisions.
With AI and the cloud informing the path of both Optimatics and Autodesk water software going forward, it feels like we’re on the cusp of a future when you won’t have to think too deeply about tool limitations. You can instead focus your attention on the outcome – making the best decisions possible.
As you might imagine, the ability to automate this kind of work and leverage Optimizer’s intelligent optimization algorithms in the cloud magnifies the number of scenarios you can run, but it also results in some seriously impressive time savings. Heinemann notes in the presentation that they estimate they’ve saved many millions of dollars by focusing on optimizing their process using a combination of both Optimatics and Autodesk water software.
