Issue:

You want to know how you can use existing DWG templates with DWGs exported from Autodesk Revit.

Causes:

Revit does not use a dwg export template file for the export. The data Revit uses for the export is hard-coded in the program, and the user-defined export settings are saved and located in the project file itself.

Solution:

DWG Export Setup

  1. Open the view you are looking to export (2D views output 2D DWG, and 3D views output 3D DWG).
  2. Export to DWG.
  3. In the export dialog, Modify DWG/DXF Export Setup as needed.
Note: You can save the setup within the project and use Transfer Project Standards to transfer this *.dwg export setup information from one project to another.

DWG Template

Follow the steps below to use exported Revit dwg files with your custom AutoCAD template(s):

  1. Define your "optimal" export settings in the Revit project or template file.
(You can define different optimized settings for different scenarios.)
Note: Remember that you can use "Transfer Project Standards" to transfer these saved settings from one Revit project to another.
  2. Define your AutoCAD Template file with your desired custom blocks and settings in it.
(You can test it with the Revit file export definitions and make refinements if necessary.)
  3. Export views from your Revit model to *.dwg.
  4. Insert the exported dwg files (from Revit) into a new drawing created using your custom AutoCAD Template. (This brings the exported geometry into your template).
