Revit viewer mode error that will not allow to save or print

Issue:

When opening Revit or when attempting to save, the following error is displayed:

Revit Current License Status

Autodesk Revit <Version>
Build: <Update build of the program>

Autodesk Revit <Version> is in viewer mode.

Viewer mode allows all functionality of Revit, except the following: save or save as in all cases; exporting or publishing modified projects; exporting or publishing any projects to a format containing model data that can be modified; or printing projects after changes are made.

Causes:

  • The product is using an expired license or has not been assigned a license.
  • The Viewer Mode is designed to allow the opening and review of a Revit model without a license, and there is a separate shortcut to start Revit in Viewer Mode. (When using this shortcut the Viewer Mode warning is displayed on product start.)
    • However, if Revit is not warning about this on start, or is launching in viewer mode when using the regular shortcut, check if any of the following solutions apply to your situation.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, check and perform the following:

  1. Make sure to enable the following prerequisites: Which URLs/Protocols need to be allowed for Autodesk Subscription Licensing
  2. Verify license type and assignment: View and Save Your License Information
  3. Try starting a new session of Revit (leaving the old one open), and check if the new session can save.
  4. Make sure that the latest updates have been installed: Where to download products and updates
  5. If Revit remains in viewer mode when relaunched:
    1. If working in the 2020 version of Revit, check if the following article applies:
      Revit 2020 is stuck in Viewer Mode
    2. If the shortcut used to start Revit is not set to use the viewer, check if the following article applies:
      Revit keeps running in viewer mode

Note: Be aware and do not start Revit Viewer instead of the regular version.
