When working in a Revit file-based worksharing project over a Wide Area Network (WAN with VPN), project members encounter:
File Tab drop-down slow to populate.
Slow or failed syncs to central (Fatal / Unrecoverable errors).
Issues opening files.
Model corruption.
Program freezing or crashing.
WAN (Wide Area Network) between workstation and server.
The design intent for Revit File-based Worksharing is that the server and workstations are located in the same physical location, within the same Local Area Network (LAN).
The bandwidth / latency between workstation and server was low enough that there was a timeout.
It is generally better to avoid using this workflow (file based worksharing over a WAN connection.
For other remote work options using Revit, see the following article: Options for Remote Access in Revit.
