Issue:

When working in a Revit file-based worksharing project over a Wide Area Network (WAN with VPN), project members encounter:

  • Performance degradation or slower startup of the software.
  • File Tab drop-down slow to populate.

  • Slow or failed syncs to central (Fatal / Unrecoverable errors).

  • Issues opening files.

  • Model corruption.

  • Program freezing or crashing.

  • Revit related network speed reduction.

Environment:

WAN (Wide Area Network) between workstation and server.

Causes:

  • The design intent for Revit File-based Worksharing is that the server and workstations are located in the same physical location, within the same Local Area Network (LAN).

  • The bandwidth / latency between workstation and server was low enough that there was a timeout.

Solution:

It is generally better to avoid using this workflow (file based worksharing over a WAN connection.
