Issue:

Moving the cursor over complex objects in AutoCAD makes the software hang or freeze. The duration of the hang/freeze/lockup will depend upon the complexity and type of the object(s) in question.

Causes:

  • If running Object Snaps (OSNAPS) are enabled, AutoCAD's cursor will attempt to analyze all objects to determine usable snapping points. For objects with many vertices or potential snap points, this process can take longer than it would for a regular line, for example.
  • SELECTIONPREVIEW is enabled, which causes significant delays when moving the cursor over large and complex geometry.

Solution:

  • Simplify the object causing the lockup (e.g., explode one or more objects, explode blocks and nested blocks)
  • Turn off running object snaps. Pressing the appropriate function key function key (F11 for Windows, F3 for Mac) or setting the OSMODE system variable to 0 will disable running object snaps.
  • If the drawing has been generated from a third-party software, this may cause some compatibility issues.
  • Disable SELECTIONPREVIEW by setting it to 0.
