Questions and Answers for Customers

  1. What is Flame on the cloud?
Flame on the cloud is a new way for you to experience the Flame Family of products. Flame Family version 2023 will be run on the AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud platform, making Flame more flexible and scalable than ever before.
  2. When will Flame on the AWS cloud be available?
The ability to deploy Flame on the AWS cloud is available as of April 13, 2022, with the release of Flame Family version 2023.
  3. Is Flame on the cloud a new product offering?
No, Flame on the cloud is not a new product offering or a modified version of Flame. Just as Flame can be run on Linux and macOS, the cloud is another place to deploy Flame, with all the tools and workflows you already know.
  4. What are the benefits of leveraging the cloud?
Leveraging Flame on the cloud allows you to add and remove capacity in crunch times, without the need to add more hardware at your local site. By running on the cloud, you can securely connect to the Flame instance from just about anywhere and be up and running in minimal time and contributing to your project. Leveraging the cloud also gives you access to powerful modern hardware without the capital expense of purchasing it.
  5. What workflows are best suited for Flame on the cloud?
Flame workflows can be transitioned to the cloud, from shot-based visual effects to long format finishing. There are several considerations that you should make before selecting an all-cloud workflow, such as network bandwidth, storage, and infrastructure needs.
  6. Which Flame Family products support cloud deployment?
Autodesk Flame, Flare, Flame Assist, and Burn enable cloud deployment. Deploying Flame Family products on the AWS cloud will follow the same licensing model as on-premise.
  7. What version of Flame Family products support cloud deployment?
Flame Family 2023 release is the first version to be enabled on the cloud. It is not recommended to use previously released software versions as Autodesk made software changes to support the cloud deployment.
  8. Will Flame work on cloud computing platforms other than AWS?
Autodesk Flame has been tested on the AWS platform. If you are looking to deploy Flame with a different cloud vendor, please reach out to an Autodesk-authorized reseller or a System Integrator (SI).
  9. What remote connectivity and storage solutions should I consider for Flame on the cloud?
Secure remote connectivity is achieved via Teradici CAS remoting software, leveraging PCoIP technology. Based on your production requirements (format, resolution, frame rate, size of project, etc.), there are various storage solutions available on the AWS cloud. For a robust workflow, Autodesk has worked closely with Weka.IO to ensure their solutions support Flame Family workflows and workloads. NICE DCV (from AWS) is another solution for remote display. See the Flame Family system requirements for new storage solutions qualified by Autodesk and others self-qualified by their vendors.
  10. What are the costs associated with running Flame on AWS cloud?
There are no additional licensing costs as you must use your existing named user or single-user Flame Family license(s) to enable Flame on the cloud. Note that you cannot run an on-premise or cloud version simultaneously on a single license. Costs related to AWS instances, remote connectivity software, storage, networking, etc. may vary with the type of installation required, duration, storage, and compute needs. For more information, talk to an Autodesk-authorized reseller or an AWS enabled System Integrator (SI).
  11. How can I monitor my work when using Flame to the cloud?
Monitoring on the AWS cloud is achieved using Network Device Interface (NDI) or AWS Cloud Digital Interface (CDI) instead of HDMI/SDI.
  12. How can Autodesk support me in deploying Flame on the cloud?
Just like with Flame installations for local machines, Autodesk provides specific Flame Family packages for you to install and deploy on the AWS cloud, including a base AMI (Rocky Linux + DKU) available on Flame Family system requirements. The Reference Implementation Guide includes simple reference configurations and basic best practices. Autodesk Technical Support will provide help on software issues but will not be able to provide configuration help or guidance as cloud deployments vary greatly between workflows and facilities. For more installations not provided in the Reference Implementation Guide, Autodesk recommends contacting an Autodesk-authorized reseller or an AWS enabled System Integrator (SI), who have the expertise to tailor deployments to your specific needs and ease your transition from on-premise to cloud workflows.
  13. What resellers and AWS enabled System Integrators (SIs) are currently equipped to help me deploy Flame on the cloud?
The following list of resellers and AWS enabled System Integrators (SIs) have successfully deployed Flame on the cloud and are equipped to help with your workflow, deployment, and configuration needs.

  14. Where can I learn more?
You can learn more by reading Autodesk’s Reference Implementation Guide, which covers three workflow examples of how Flame can be deployed on the cloud, or by contacting an Autodesk-authorized reseller or an AWS enabled System Integrator (SI).
