Issue:

How to update a computer system's graphics driver.

Solution:

Updating a graphics driver requires first identifying the video card and then downloading and installing the driver.

Identify the graphics card

Windows:

  1. Type device manager into the Start menu.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Double-click the graphics card and then click the Driver tab.

  4. Make note of the video card model and the date of the driver. Dates are easier for determining an older or newer driver instead of using the version number.

macOS:

  1. From the Apple menu, click About This Mac
  2. Click System Report
  3. In the Hardware section, select Graphics/Displays.

Download and install the driver

Testing is done on specific card models with specific driver versions. Generally, installing the latest driver available from the graphics card manufacturer is recommended. Depending on the card, use the following links to look up and download the driver:

However, sometimes, using a tested/certified driver may be better. Autodesk has tested and certified several graphics cards and drivers (see Certified Graphics Hardware). To download a certified driver:

  1. Go to the Certified Graphics Hardware list.
  2. Select the Autodesk product, version, and operating system.
  3. Find the graphics card in the certified list.
  4. Under the Driver column, click the download symbol. This downloads the specific, tested driver from the graphics card manufacturer.

Notes:

  • For the macOS, updating a graphics card requires updating the macOS. There are no separate downloads to install a video driver on Apple systems.
  • On Windows, if a graphics card is not shown in the certified driver list, that particular card has not been tested. This in no way means it will not work with a particular Autodesk product. In this scenario, obtain the latest driver from the graphics card manufacturer.
  • The latest certified driver may be older than the current version available from the card manufacturer, or what is already installed. To install an older video driver, uninstall the current one first. This is done through Programs and Features in the Windows Control Panel.
