Create objects in Alias

00:03

I'm going to use the palette in a horizontal orientation.

00:06

And I'm going to create some subdivision and some surface primitives.

00:10

In icon mode, this blue triangle here tells me there's a submenu.

00:15

So if I do a click and hold, I can choose a cylinder, for example.

00:19

And then it's shown up here as the current continuous tool.

00:22

And if I follow the prompt, I can just click in the scene

00:26

and then I'll just turn the shading on.

00:28

And because this is a continuous tool, it's inviting me to place another cylinder.

00:33

So this time I'm going to switch to a side orthographic view and place one

00:39

and then I'll switch to another view and place another cylinder.

00:43

And you can see that the view I chose affects the orientation.

00:47

Now we're still in the Cylinder tool,

00:49

so it's very easy to accidentally keep clicking.

00:52

So to exit a tool, there isn't a specific done command in Alias

00:57

and instead we do a Pick Nothing followed by a Pick Object.

01:00

And now we're no longer placing cylinders.

01:05

So let's select these and hit the Delete key,

01:08

and have a look at how we might use this to

01:09

create a couple of wheel outlines for this car model.

01:13

So I'll just fit the view and switch to a side view.

01:18

And this small square here means that I can double-click or Shift +

01:21

click to open an options window.

01:24

So I can for example, turn off these end caps.

01:27

And this blue outline on a tool window means I need to hit the Go button to move on.

01:33

And this time I'm going to use grid snap by holding down

01:36

the Alt key before I click to accurately snap to the origin.

01:42

And then I can move scale or rotate.

01:45

And this pale blue handle does all three axes so I can click release on a scale handle

01:51

and change that center one from move to scale.

01:55

And then with the green handle,

01:57

I can scale it in the Y direction only, and then

01:60

I can use the green arrow to move it outwards.

02:04

So I could now exit the tool with a Pick Nothing and a Pick Object.

02:08

But in the normal flow of work, we would simply move on to the next tool.

02:12

So I'll pick a subdivision cylinder this time for the rear wheel

02:16

and I can open the settings window again

02:18

and then I'll switch to a side view

02:21

and use the grid snap again

02:23

and scale it and move it as before.

02:28

But here, if I just use the box mode shading,

02:31

you can see that because this window doesn't have the blue outline,

02:34

it stays open

02:36

and I can adjust these values interactively

02:40

and then I can close it and finish off just by doing a Pick Nothing

02:43

followed by Pick Object.
