The item details panel shows all the information within an item. Let’s explore the panel and make modifications in our bill of materials.
To begin working with items in Upchain, we’ll look at the data managed by an item in the item details panel.

Opening the details panel which enables us to view more detailed information about the item,

reviewing the information in the details panel such as the item's history, notes, or attach documents and modifying an attribute for an item.

So, let's take a look.

The BOM interface provides you with a lot of information related to your items.

One of the areas where you can find information about an item is the details panel.

To access the details panel, first, we must select an item from the navigation tree.

This loads the item in the center view.

From there, we can select an item and open the item details panel.

The item details panel has a thumbnail of the item, plus a series of icons down the left-hand side to provide more information about the item.

The main details icon up at the top provides the item's attribute information.

Some of the information we see here includes the item's name, description, type, status, and even who created the item.

Below the detail’s icon, we find the business processes icon.

This area lists the business processes managed by all change such as change requests and investigation requests that reference this item.

The documents icon is where you can access all the documents associated with the item.

This includes the CAD file, drawings, and translations.

Additional support documents such as requirements or compliance documents can also be found here.

While it is great to have all this information available to us about an item, sometimes you will need to add additional information.

When the item is in the development status, the attributes listed here will be available for editing.

We need to click the details icon then the edit icon, which is just below the item thumbnail.

Now, if we were to go back and view our history, we can see that the actions have been updated in real-time.

One of the actions you can do is copy and paste the item within your project or to another project.

As an example, we have this item, a rod eyelet, and we need to reuse at another location.

I don't want to remove it. I want to copy it for reuse.

To copy an item, we simply click on the more actions or ellipsis and select copy.

Then we select the destination.

For this example, we're going to copy our eyelet and paste it into another fishing rod project.

We'll open the other project, navigate to the destination.

This will paste a copy of the item into the new location again, whether it's the same project or a different one.

If we look at the item, we can see that the item number for the copied item is the same as the original item,

Therefore, any changes to either of these items, the change will also be updated in the other item.

For instance, if we were to update the description field for an eyelet, to alconite eyelet.

Along with being able to copy items within the BOM, you can also move items.

This option allows you to move the item from one location to another within the BOM.

For example, let's say the eyelet we just copied, we want to move to a different area in the BOM structure.

Perhaps we copied it to the wrong position.

We can do that by selecting our item, clicking on the ellipsis, and selecting move.

We can then select the destination location for the item.

Again, clicking on the ellipsis and this time selecting paste.

So instead of being under the main assembly, our eyelet is now listed under the rod assembly, or is now a child under a different parent assembly.

A reminder that the move feature works with child items and not any end item you have within your BOM structure.

You may, on occasion, need to remove an item from your BOM structure.

This can be done using the remove feature.

For this example, the eyelet that we just added, we're going to take it back out as we discovered we're right at the length parameter for this rod.

We really have too many for this set size, and we don't need it anymore.

So again, click on the ellipsis and select remove for that particular item.

This will remove this instance of the item from its current location.

Note, the item can still potentially exist elsewhere in the same BOM, but that the remove option does not remove the item from Upchain.

If at any point you wanted to add the item back into the project we can then either copy the existing item as part of the BOM structure.

When modifying the BOM structure, the changes made will not affect the BOM as it is represented in CAD. When working with the CAD, Upchain will notify the CAD user of any anomalies between the cBOM (CAD BOM) and eBOM (engineering BOM). The CAD user may review these anomalies and decide whether and how they should be resolved.
When modifying the BOM structure, we recommend using the Save as New eBOM Version function to save your changes. This can be useful if items are accidentally removed and you wish to retrieve them. The latest eBOM version is displayed by default but you can choose any previous eBOM version from the drop down menu.
