Create Room Data Sheet - Automation Tools

00:00

As you just saw, creating Room Data Sheets is a labor-intensive process.

00:05

In this bonus video, we're going to look at some tools you can use to automate the process,

00:09

as well as some more complex software solutions for managing presenting room data.

00:14

Now there are a number of ways that we can automate the production of our Room Data Sheets.

00:19

The first way is that we could create a series of Dynamo scripts,

00:23

and we could create one script that would generate an enlarged plan for all of our rooms.

00:28

And then we could use another script that would put those views onto sheets.

00:33

Now, if you're not Dynamo savvy, KIWI Codes creates an add-in for Revit that automates a lot of the Room Data Sheet creation process.

00:41

It's part of their Bonus Tools add-in, and it's not a free add-in, but it's reasonably priced,

00:45

and it includes a lot of other really useful tools.

00:49

So, I'm going to click on the "Bonus Tools View".

00:51

Inside the dialog box, I can choose which rooms I want to create Room Data Sheets for.

00:57

I'm not going to select all the rooms now, I'm just going to select a few of them.

01:01

But then I can also choose if I want to use Linked Files or not.

01:04

And I can elect to add a filled region to the Plan View.

01:08

Now, I'm going to set my Phase to New Construction, and then I'm going to choose the views that I want to generate.

01:15

So, I'm going to choose "Floor Plan", and I'm also going to choose "Sheets".

01:19

But I could also generate a 3D View, a Ceiling Plan, Elevations and Sections as well.

01:25

In the Floor and Ceiling Plan tab, I'm going to set my Floor Plan Type to Enlarged Plan,

01:31

and I'm going to choose the RDS Enlarged Plan View Template that I created earlier.

01:36

I'm also going to set my Crop Extension to 1 since I'm working in an imperial file.

01:41

Next, I'll go to the Schedules and Sheets tab, and I'm going to choose the RDS Sheet that I created earlier.

01:48

The tool will use this as a template when it generates all the subsequent sheets.

01:52

So, it'll choose the right Title Block and the number sequence.

01:56

So, everything looks good.

01:57

I'm going to go ahead and click "Create Views".

01:60

And the tools going to go through and Generate the View and put those views on the sheets.

02:04

Now, I have this option where I can change any of the sheet properties after it creates them.

02:09

So, I can change the sheet number, I can change the Title Block and all of the sheet data.

02:13

This looks good for me right now, so I'm going to click "OK".

02:16

And it lets me know that it created four Room Data Sheets.

02:21

And then I’m going to click and take a look at them.

02:23

So, here are the actual Room Data Sheets.

02:26

You'll see that it created the Enlarged Plan.

02:28

It's not necessarily in the right location that I want, so I can move this up here.

02:32

Then I'm going to go ahead, I'm going to activate the view.

02:37

And I'm going to go to the "Architecture" ribbon and I'm going to choose Tag Room and I'm going to place my Room Data Room Tag.

02:47

And I could go to my next one, do the same thing.

02:52

Activate view, tag the room.

03:03

So, I still have to do some of this manually.

03:06

But generating the views, generating the sheets happens for me using the Room Data Sheet tool.

03:12

So, it can save me a significant amount of time.

03:15

If you're looking for an even more automated workflow, here are two applications you may want to look at.

03:22

dRofus is a standalone Room Data Management tool.

03:25

It reads Revit model data into a central database that can then be shared with various members of the project team.

03:32

The software can present the room data in various formats.

03:36

Likewise, CodeBook creates repository for your room data,

03:39

and provides tools to create Room Data Sheets as well as other room related documentation.

03:45

Both of these applications provide a robust set of tools for managing your room and program information.

03:51

They reside outside of Revit, so team members who aren't BIM savvy can more easily contribute to the process.
