Design for sustainability with ASME
Course overview
Sustainability is the practice of using resources in a way that preserves the environment and supports society, while ensuring economic viability for generations to come. To advance sustainability in design and engineering, we must consider how to foster a sustainability mindset in our design and make process. Understanding a product’s lifecycle, including materials, resources, and manufacturing processes, is linked to ethics and the responsible criteria we set for our designs.
In this course, you’ll learn:
- What sustainability is and why it matters.
- How to have a mindset for sustainability as an engineer.
- What the “Triple Bottom Line” is and why it matters.
- How value chain and supply chains impact our environment.
- The impact of product lifecycle on design solutions.
- How to use product lifecycle tools.
- What the “systems approach” is and why it matters.
- Ethical considerations and dilemmas.
- What microplastics are and design factors to consider when removing them.
ASME and Autodesk have partnered to develop this course to promote Industry 4.0 skills in design and manufacturing. This is the first course in a series of self-paced courses to equip students with the knowledge and abilities needed to thrive in the industry 4.0 era of the manufacturing industry.
