Practice exercise

In this exercise you'll practice how to edit an existing Form body, use Insert Point, use Crease/Uncrease, and use Insert Edge.

00:01

This is a practice exercise video solution

00:05

for this practice exercise. Let's get started with the supply data set crease dot f.

00:10

Three D.

00:11

We want to take a look at some of the form

00:12

tools and you'll notice that this design doesn't have any history.

00:16

We're currently working on the form

00:18

and you can see that we have form tools available

00:21

whenever working on a design that doesn't have history.

00:24

The form tools will be directly accessible

00:26

without having to go into the contextual environment

00:29

for this example,

00:30

let's carry on working without history and let's explore

00:33

ad increases and additional edges to control the geometry.

00:36

The first thing that I want to do is go to modify

00:39

and insert point and I want to finish off this section here.

00:42

Notice that it's asking me to upgrade the version.

00:45

If you ever open an older version of a fusion 3 60 T. Spline body.

00:50

There are new features that get added from time to time.

00:52

It will be asked to upgrade the body

00:55

or say, okay,

00:56

and then we'll go ahead and select these two end points and insert those edges

00:60

from here.

01:01

Let's go ahead and double click on this edge

01:03

and notice that it stops at the star point.

01:05

Will hold down, shift and double click on the next edge.

01:07

Then we'll go to modify and we want to insert a crease

01:11

crease. Will add a hard edge to the design.

01:14

This will be able to be Phil it'd when we convert this to a surface or a solid.

01:18

Let's go ahead and take a look at adding some additional features.

01:22

I'm going to double click this edge and go to modify and insert edge.

01:27

We want to add this edge relatively close

01:30

and we'll say, okay,

01:31

so you can see that.

01:32

We've added a new feature here, We've added a little bit of a crease.

01:36

And then we've also added this section which is relatively close together

01:40

to view this without edges.

01:41

We can go to our display settings and change our visual style to shade it,

01:45

which is also controlling the number four on the keyboard.

01:48

This will help us get a better idea of the shape of the design we're working on

01:52

For me, the crease doesn't really look great.

01:54

So I want to make sure that I remove the crease and

01:57

I add a smooth edge like we did on the handle.

01:60

To increase an edge. We can double click on it.

02:03

We can go to modify and select, increase

02:07

this will remove the crease from that edge. And we can say okay

02:10

when we have an edge like this that isn't continuous because it ends at a star point.

02:14

We aren't able to simply insert an edge to all areas.

02:17

What we need to do is insert an edge on part of it and then complete it on the other side.

02:22

We could also select the inside loop which is complete and insert an edge here.

02:28

This will allow us to drag it out towards this edge

02:30

and then we can say, okay,

02:32

once again control and four on the keyboard will allow us

02:35

to remove those edges and take a look at the results.

02:38

This looks pretty good so far but I want

02:40

to make a few last minute adjustments so control

02:43

in six to bring my edges back and I want to pull this in to do this.

02:47

I'm going to go into my box display

02:50

which is also salt and one on the keyboard

02:52

and this will help me make my final adjustments.

02:55

I want to narrow up the handle in this area using modify and edit form.

02:60

Want to make sure that I select all the vertex is of interest,

03:02

holding down the shift or control key

03:05

once I have these, I'm going to view this from the right hand side

03:08

and pull this inward slightly.

03:10

I want to repeat the process up a little bit.

03:13

So I'm going to select this vertex C and this vertex C.

03:17

And go ahead and pull that in just slightly.

03:21

Also note that we can move entire edges at the same time and not just versaces.

03:25

So let's go ahead and pull those back just a little bit.

03:28

And lastly we want to double click on this edge. And from that right hand view

03:33

we are going to pull that out just slightly

03:38

To go back to our smooth display.

03:40

We can do it inside of the edit form dialogue by

03:42

going down to the selection options and going to smooth display.

03:46

We can also again use Alton one and Alton three on the keyboard.

03:50

Last check,

03:51

controlling four to get rid of the edges and just double check the handle shape.

03:55

Everything looks pretty good here. I'm happy with the results.

03:58

So I'm going to say control in six

04:01

if you're ever working in the forms environment on a direct model without history.

04:05

Under utilities, you have the option to convert

04:08

when we convert the body.

04:10

We can select the T.

04:11

Spline body and we can convert it to a surface

04:14

or solid depending on if it's closed or open.

04:17

In this case, we can also determine edges that we want to keep

04:20

if we want to maintain certain edges when the surfaces are created.

04:23

We can double click on those and that will help us maintain those edges.

04:28

Once we say, okay,

04:29

it'll create a surface body for us and

04:31

you'll notice during the conversion those edges were kept

04:34

because this body is symmetric. The edges were kept on the other side as well.

04:38

This can help for downstream manipulation of the design and something

04:41

that's not available when you're creating foreign bodies while capturing history

04:46

at this stage.

04:47

Let's make sure that we note in the body's folder,

04:49

we still have the original form body

04:51

as well as the converted surface body.

04:53

This is another great methodology to continue working on forms

04:57

and make multiple versions while maintaining an original form body.

05:00

You can also select a form body.

05:03

You can right click and copy it

05:05

and select the Bodies folder

05:07

and paste it

05:08

so you can have an exact copy that you can convert to a surface or a solid,

05:12

and maintain a new copy that you can manipulate and add new features.

05:16

At this point, let's make sure that we do save this design before moving on.
