Grouping Clashes in Clash Detective (6:01 min)

MARTHA HOLLOWELL ORCUTT: Grouping Clashes

00:02

in Clash Detective.

00:04

Now that you have clashes created,

00:06

what do you do with them?

00:07

You want to be able to understand the clash in context

00:11

and assign the clashes to the people who

00:13

can correct the situation.

00:15

It helps to clean up the views and then group the clashes that

00:19

can be assigned to specific disciplines.

00:23

In Navisworks Manage, open the Navisworks file

00:26

set Small Hospital Combined Grouping.

00:29

First, we're going to clean up the view a bit more.

00:31

If the grid is displaying in the view,

00:34

in the View tab, Grids and Levels panel,

00:37

toggle off Show Grid.

00:40

We've already turned off the Architectural Model,

00:43

but you can also hide individual elements in the models,

00:46

either through the selection tree

00:48

or by clicking on an element.

00:52

So I selected one of the floors and then in the selection tree,

00:56

you can see I've got just one type of floor selected,

00:59

but I want all the floors selected.

01:01

So I'm going to select Floors and then right-click and select

01:09

Hide.

01:11

There are other things in here I really don't need,

01:13

and those are some of the electrical items.

01:16

So I'm going to select one of the Electrical Fixtures

01:19

and do the same thing.

01:20

This is a lighting device, and I want

01:23

to go ahead and go to the top level.

01:25

I can also go to the Home tab and click Hide,

01:28

and it does the same thing.

01:32

There's one other little item here

01:34

that is a duplex receptacle Electrical Fixtures,

01:38

and I'm going to go ahead and turn those off as well,

01:40

and I can right-click and Hide in the screen as well.

01:45

The hide is actually a toggle, so if I needed them back on,

01:49

I would select them in the selection tree,

01:52

and then click Hide again.

01:55

Let's hide one more thing.

01:56

In the selection tree.

01:58

I'm going to select Duct Fittings, Ducts,

02:00

and Flex Ducts, and then I can go ahead

02:04

and hide this entire group.

02:06

Later on, we'll talk about creating sets

02:08

and how to make those work better for you.

02:12

Now we're ready to group some clashes.

02:15

So I'm going to open the clash detective

02:17

and select the Results tab.

02:21

If you have a lot of parts in one area,

02:23

they still appear as separate clashes.

02:26

And we want to add some of those clashes that are related

02:29

to each other to groups.

02:33

So I'm going to select Clash 7.

02:36

And you can see that there is a pipe going through the beam.

02:39

But if you zoom in enough, you can also see that there is--

02:43

the pipe fitting is also clashing with this.

02:47

So definitely at least, these two items

02:49

need to be grouped together.

02:50

They are really one item.

02:52

So I'm going to select the beam and the pipes.

02:57

I'm going to select the nearby beam

02:59

as well to check and see if there's

03:01

any additional overlaps.

03:04

Now, back in Clash Detective, I'm

03:06

going to select Filter by Selection.

03:09

And in this dropdown list, you have

03:11

a couple of different options.

03:13

One is to None, which shows all clashes,

03:16

and then you have Exclusive, which

03:18

shows clashes where both of the items selected are showing.

03:22

And you can see here clash 7 and 15.

03:26

Now, Inclusive shows if there are more clashes that may

03:30

be selected in this grouping.

03:32

So again, I do have an additional one.

03:34

It's clash 3, and so I now have several clashes Oh,

03:39

and by the way, when I select on a clash, it auto jumps to it.

03:44

If I want to change my viewpoint,

03:46

I can change it to manual, and then

03:48

when I check one of the other clashes,

03:49

it's going to display the clash, but it's not

03:52

going to change my viewport.

03:53

So that's just a handy tip when you're starting

03:55

to look at things like here.

03:58

So those are my three clashes that are all together,

04:01

all the same system, sanitary system.

04:03

So I'm going to click new group and name this 001 beams

04:09

and sanitary.

04:14

And then I'm going to select all three of the clashes.

04:17

Hold down your Control key and select them,

04:20

and then you can drag them up into the group.

04:24

So I'm going to click out in space to remove my selection,

04:28

change the filter back to none, and now you

04:30

can see in the clashes that I have that group.

04:32

And it shows all the elements being clash.

04:36

Now I'm going to change my viewpoint back to Auto-update

04:42

and click on Clash 1.

04:44

I'm going to need to zoom in here because I'm not actually

04:47

seeing the clash.

04:48

And what it is with a small pipe.

04:50

So here's my clash, and what I need to do is select this beam

04:55

and then change my filter to Exclusive.

04:58

And you can see nothing actually is showing because it's not

05:01

showing an additional item.

05:04

So let's go to Inclusive.

05:05

And now here's all the clashes that

05:07

are clashing with this particular beam.

05:10

I'm going to change my viewpoint to Manual,

05:13

and then I can select on each of my clashes.

05:15

You can see that both of these are going through the beam.

05:18

Therefore, another place for a new group.

05:20

I'm going to call it

05:24

And once again, hold down your Control key,

05:27

and select the clashes, and drag them into the group.

05:33

Now I'll change my viewpoint back to Auto-update

05:37

and my filter to None.

05:39

And I have my two sets of clashes

05:42

along with the rest of the clashes.

05:44

So I should go ahead and continue

05:45

going through all the clashes, checking them out,

05:48

adding anything together.

05:50

So we now have cleaned up our clashes,

05:52

and we're ready to assign them.

Now we're ready to group some clashes.

02:15

02:33

02:39

But if you zoom in enough, you can also see that there is--

03:26

03:32

04:44

05:48

adding anything together.

05:50

So we now have cleaned up our clashes,

05:52

and we're ready to assign them.

Try it: Grouping Clashes in Clash Detective

Now that the clashes have been created what do you do with them? You want to be able to understand the clash in context and assign them to the people who can correct the situation. It helps to clean up the views and then group clashes that can be assigned to specific disciplines.

  1.  In Navisworks Manage , open the Navisworks File Set SMALL_HOSPITAL_COMBINED-Grouping.nwf.

    Cleaning up the view

  2. First, we are going to clean up the view a bit more. If the grid is displaying in the view, in the View tab > Grids and Levels paneltoggle off Show Grid.
  3. We have already turned off the architectural model, you can also hide individual elements in the models either through the selection tree or by clicking on an element and then, in the Home tab > Visibility panel, click Hide or right-click and hide. For example, we don’t need to see the structural floors in our view at this time. Select one of the floors, right-click and select Hide.
  4. Select one of the lighting devices. You can see the entire tree display in the Selection Tree. Select the top level of Lighting Devices, right-click and select Hide (or type Ctrl-H).
  5. In the Selection Tree, select Electrical Fixtures. In the Home tab, Visibility panel, click Hide.
  6. If you want any of these items back on then, select them in the Selection Tree and click Hide again. This is an on/off toggle.

    Grouping Clashes

  7. Open the Clash Detective and select the Results tab. If you have a lot of parts in one area they still appear as separate clashes. We want to add some clashes that are related to each other to groups.
  8. Select Clash 7, notice that not only is the select pipe clashing but also the pipe fitting. Rotate around to see the pipe.
  9. When you find a good view that shows both the sinks and the connected sanitary piping, In Clash Detective, in the Display Settings panel, set the Viewpoint to Manual so the view won’t change when you select another clash.
  10. Hold down Shift and click until you see the entire pipe system selected.
  11. Hold down Ctrl and select both nearby beams.
  12. Expand Filter by Selection and select Inclusive. Most of the clashes display because either the selected beams OR the select pipes are included in a clash. Change the Filter to Exclusive. Now, only the clashes where the pipe system cross the two beams is selected. These are the clashes we want to group because they all impact the same part of the sanitary system.
  13. In Clash Detective, Click New Group. Name the new group 001 Sanitary vs Beam.
  14. Select and drag the three clashes into the Clash group.
  15. Change back to filter none. select the three clashes – 3, 7, and 15.
  16. Select clash 1 and zoom in on the two pipes where they run through the beam. Select both pipes and set the Filter to Exclusive. Create a new group named 002 Pipes vs Beam. Drag the two clashes into the group.
  17. Set the Filter to None.
  18. Change the Viewpoint to Auto-update. Select Clash 1 and notice that there are two pipes going through the beam.
  19. Select the beam and change the Filter to Inclusive. The other clash is displayed in the list.
  20. Create another Group, name it 002 Water vs Beam and drag the two clashes into this group.
  21. Set the Filter back to None. As you have time, continue to group other clashes that make more sense to show in the same clash group.
