Create a new network and set the coordinate system

00:03

If you have a database created, you can create a new, blank network and then import data to populate the network model.

00:12

First, create a model group, which stores all the modelling and simulation data for a project.

00:20

Right-click the Database and select New > Model Group.

00:25

In the New Name dialog, for this exercise, enter “Create_Network”, and then click OK.

00:33

Next, create the network.

00:36

Right-click Create_Network and select New InfoWorks > InfoWorks Network.

00:43

In the popup, enter a name for your network, such as “1D Sewer Network”, and then click OK.

00:51

The GeoPlan view is created, but it is blank because it does not yet contain any data.

00:58

But, before you can import any data, you need to set the correct coordinate system.

01:04

From the menu, select GeoPlan > Set Coordinate System.

01:09

In the Select Coordinate System dialog, under Projection, select the Choose (…) button.

01:17

For these tutorials, in the Choose Coordinate System dialog, select British Coordinate Systems > British National Grid [ESPG 27700].

01:30

Click OK.

01:32

Click OK again to close the Select Coordinate System dialog.

01:37

It is possible to add additional coordinate systems if your regions do not appear in the standard list.

01:44

The GeoPlan view changes to reflect the new location in space.

01:49

If you have objects in the view, you can right-click the GeoPlan and select Zoom to network to work with your repositioned objects.

01:59

This will ensure that network objects align with any background layers or mapping that you have displayed.

02:06

With the coordinate system set for the network, you are ready to import network data.

Step-by-step guide

Once a database is created, a new, blank network can be created to then import data to populate the network model.

First, create a model group, which stores all the modelling and simulation data for a project:

  1. Right-click the Database and select New > Model Group.

In the InfoWorks ICM interface, the Database shortcut menu with New selected, and in the flyout, Model group selected.

  1. In the New Name dialog box, for this exercise, enter "Create_Network".
  2. Click OK.

Next, create the network:

  1. Right-click Create_Network and select New InfoWorks > InfoWorks Network.
  2. In the popup, enter a name for the network, such as "1D Sewer Network".
  3. Click OK.

The GeoPlan view is created, but it is blank because it does not yet contain any data.

Before any data is imported, the correct coordinate system must be set:

  1. From the menu bar, select GeoPlan > Set Coordinate System.
  2. In the Select Coordinate System dialog box, under Projection, select the Choose () button.

The Select Coordinate System dialog box with the Choose button highlighted.

  1. For these tutorials, in the Choose Coordinate System dialog box, select British Coordinate Systems > British National Grid [EPSG 27700].

The choose Coordinate System dialog box with British National Grid [EPSG 27700] selected and highlighted, and OK selected.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Click OK again to close the Select Coordinate System dialog box.

It is possible to add additional coordinate systems if local regions do not appear in the standard list.

The GeoPlan view changes to reflect the new location in space.

  1. If there are objects in the view, right-click the GeoPlan and select Zoom to network to work with the repositioned objects.

This ensures that network objects align with any background layers or mapping that is displayed.

With the coordinate system set for the network, ICM is ready to import network data.
