NARRATOR: In this video, we're going
00:02
to make a button image for the 150-pound gate
00:05
valve using a free online editor called Pixlr.
00:09
The available programs you can use
00:10
are similar enough in operation and functionality
00:14
that this video will help regardless
00:16
what program you choose to use.
00:20
Most of the time, finding the images you will need
00:22
is as easy as going to the manufacturer's website
00:25
and downloading them.
00:27
The valve we've been building is a Crane Stockham G623 gate
00:32
valve.
00:33
On their website, they only have one picture of the gate valve,
00:37
and it's not the G623.
00:40
Some PDFs will have good images.
00:43
But once again, they only have one, and it's not the G623.
00:49
Remember, getting the exact item will help avoid confusion
00:52
by the detailer.
00:54
So if we can find the exact item, it's worth it.
00:58
The other way to find the images do an online search.
01:03
I did the search.
01:05
And I finally found a G623.
01:09
I'm going to right-click on the image and Save Image As.
01:14
Name it G623, and just save it to my desktop.
01:20
Now, we are going to go to Pixlr.com.
01:25
And in this top toolbar, click Pixlr E.
01:30
I'm going to show you a few tools and techniques that
01:33
will allow you to clean up and make the image file
01:36
Autodesk fabrication needs.
01:39
Let's get started by opening the image we just downloaded.
01:42
Click on Open Image, select our file, click Open.
01:51
The first thing we are going to do is clean up the background.
01:55
As you can see against a white background,
01:58
there's some dark shading around the valve and at the bottom.
02:04
To get rid of that, we are going to use
02:06
a tool called the Magic Wand.
02:08
It selects areas with similar colors.
02:12
That's this button right here.
02:14
When we select it, this tolerance number,
02:18
that's the number we're going to be most concerned with.
02:21
If we click on the white area, it
02:24
will select areas with a similar color.
02:26
But you can see that it's still leaving
02:28
in some of the shaded areas.
02:31
So let's bump our tolerance up.
02:35
You need to click away from the image and then back
02:37
to the white area.
02:38
Now, you can see, it is not selecting that extra shade.
02:43
This bottom part is a lot darker.
02:46
We may have to do that a different way.
02:48
So first, let's just get rid of this.
02:52
The other tool we're going to do, instead of just deleting
02:55
it, if we delete it, it makes it a transparent background.
02:60
It makes it a little tougher to work with.
03:02
So let's just fill it with white.
03:05
To do that, we want to select the Fill tool.
03:08
This white button right down here,
03:11
this is our color palette.
03:12
And it's already set to white.
03:14
And that's what we want.
03:16
So we just click in the transparent area.
03:19
And now, it's white.
03:20
So all the shading around this is gone, except for the bottom.
03:25
After that, go to the Edit and Deselect.
03:29
So now, we just need to clean up this bottom shaded area.
03:34
In order to move that shaded area,
03:36
let's click on the Draw tool.
03:39
And you can see at the top here it
03:42
is set to Brush with a pixel rate of 40.
03:46
And when you move down here, you can
03:47
see that looks like a pretty good size.
03:49
So let's just leave it.
03:51
Using your scroll wheel, you can zoom in on the item.
03:55
Let's zoom in and start cleaning up this bottom
03:58
by using your mouse to click.
04:11
You can also change the size to do smaller areas.
04:22
The next tool we can use is this Heal patch.
04:27
We click on it, you can see the size looks a little big.
04:33
Let's drop that down to about 10.
04:36
We're just going to click on the blemishes
04:38
and get them cleaned up.
04:39
This doesn't have to be perfect, but it'll
04:41
help make it look a little bit nicer.
04:45
The next thing I like to do is crop the image so
04:48
that we're not wasting some space at the top and the bottom
04:51
on this image.
04:53
Here's the Crop button.
04:55
And you simply just click and drag
04:59
the areas you want to cut out, and click Enter.
05:05
That cleans up our image.
05:07
Now what we want to do is just save it.
05:09
File, Save.
05:16
Let's keep it in its JPEG format.
05:21
And because it's an online, it's going to download a new image.
05:25
And then we close.
05:29
Now, come over to the palette on the right.
05:31
Click plus, an empty one, and we're going to move it down.
05:40
Now, with our Fill that's already set to white,
05:42
we're just going to click over here.
05:44
And now we have a square image.
05:49
Now, what we want to do is flatten these layers into one.
05:52
Come over here to the Layer dropdown
05:54
and select Flatten Image.
05:60
The next thing we're going to do is change the image size to 64
06:03
by 64.
06:05
That is the required size for Autodesk fabrication.
06:09
Click Apply.
06:12
And now, we have our 64 by 64.
06:15
Let's add some text.
06:17
Click on the Text button, then on the image.
06:20
Do you want to add a new text layer?
06:22
Add.
06:25
Let's change that color to black and the size down to 12.
06:31
Now, let's label it G623.
06:37
Now, what we want to do is rotate that to the side.
06:40
Up here, rotate left.
06:42
You can use your mouse or drag.
06:46
And now we have our text on the side.
06:49
And the final step is saving the image over our existing gate
06:54
valve image.
07:01
When you do this, it must be a PGN file.
07:11
Now, we can take this image and replace it
07:15
over our gate valve image that is in the Autodesk fabrication.
07:23
Let's just drag it over here and rename it gate valve.
07:28
This is the image that we are replacing.
07:37
And you will see now our gate valve has the correct image.
