SIMON DICKINSON: Hello.
00:02
My name is Simon Dickinson.
00:04
Let's now look at structural materials.
00:07
In this video, we are going to look
00:10
at how we can create new materials,
00:13
set the graphical appearance, apply
00:17
physical assets and finally, material libraries.
00:22
Materials in Revit are extremely powerful.
00:24
And it is a misconception that they
00:27
are just there to set hatch patterns and photorealism.
00:31
Materials in Revit have both physical and thermal assets
00:35
that can be added to them.
00:36
This adds additional functionality to the material,
00:40
allowing for both structural and thermal analysis.
00:45
The Materials icon is accessed from the Manage ribbon.
00:48
The materials that are listed in the top left window
00:51
are the materials that are part of the template stroke
00:54
project we have open.
00:56
The materials in the bottom left window
00:58
are materials that are stored in our libraries.
01:02
Please note, only materials that are in the template stroke
01:05
project can be edited.
01:08
To create new material, we first need
01:11
to duplicate an existing one.
01:14
Right click on the material and choose duplicate.
01:18
We can now rename the duplicate material.
01:24
We can now configure the Identity and Graphics
01:27
tabs of the material.
01:30
The Identity tab allows us to set
01:32
information, such as the manufacturer
01:34
and cost of the material.
01:36
The Graphics tab allows us to set
01:38
things, such as our hatch pattern for both surface
01:41
and cut and the shading color.
01:50
We can now configure our material assets.
01:53
Be aware that unlike the Identity and Graphics
01:56
tabs, which are unique to the material,
01:59
the assets that are assigned to this material are not unique
02:03
and may be assigned to multiple materials.
02:07
So changing it here may affect multiple materials.
02:12
So before making changes, it is good practice
02:15
to duplicate or replace the asset with one
02:18
from the library.
02:21
If a physical asset tab does not exist,
02:24
then you can click the plus sign on the top
02:27
and choose Physical from the dropdown.
02:31
Please note that depending on the asset used,
02:34
different options will be available.
02:37
For example, using a concrete asset
02:41
will allow us to change the concrete attributes.
02:44
And a steel asset will have steel attributes.
02:51
Materials can be dragged back to the library once changed
02:55
for use in other projects.
02:58
New material libraries can be created
03:00
by clicking on the plus button in the bottom left.
