Practice exercise

How to fully define a sketch

Learn the fundamentals for fully defining sketches in Fusion.

After completing this practice exercise, you'll be able to:

  • Edit a sketch.
  • Add a sketch dimension.
  • Add a sketch constraint.

This is a practice exercise video solution.

00:06

To get started,

00:06

we want to open the supply data set under defined.

00:09

F3D.

00:10

We want to make sure that this sketch is fully defined.

00:13

If we expand the sketches folder,

00:15

we can see there's a small pencil icon showing us that the sketch is underdefined.

00:19

We can also see that all the sketch entities are displayed as blue,

00:22

meaning that they're not fully defined.

00:25

Let's double click on sketch one

00:27

and begin by fully defining the position of our circle.

00:30

We're gonna do this using the left mouse button to drag the center of the circle

00:34

to the intersection point of the two orange construction lines.

00:38

We can also do this by applying constraints.

00:41

First,

00:41

we'll select the center point of the circle,

00:43

hold down shift,

00:44

and select the origin.

00:45

Then,

00:46

from our constraints tools,

00:47

we'll select coincident.

00:49

We also have a couple of other constraints that we need to apply.

00:53

Let's go ahead and pre-select the perpendicular

00:55

constraint and apply it between this left line

00:58

and this horizontal line.

01:00

This can be done by either pre-selecting the constraint tool,

01:04

or you can pre-select the sketch entities and then apply the constraint.

01:08

Let's go ahead and hit escape.

01:11

Currently,

01:12

our sketch is defined with constraints,

01:14

but there are no dimensions.

01:15

So we need to begin applying some dimensions by using the sketch dimension tool.

01:20

We'll start by selecting the circle

01:22

and apply a 50 millimeter diameter and hit enter.

01:26

I'm gonna double click the mouse wheel to fit the screen

01:28

and then zoom out so that I can see my entire thing.

01:32

Next,

01:32

I'm gonna left click and select the vertical line and make this 75 millimeters.

01:37

Then I'm gonna left click to select the horizontal line and we'll make this 200.

01:42

Once our sketch is fully defined,

01:44

all the sketch entities will turn black and we'll also see that the

01:47

pencil icon on our sketch has changed to a small lock icon.

01:51

We can go ahead and select finished sketch,

01:53

go back to a home view,

01:55

and make sure that we save our design before moving on.
