Create Grading Design

00:00

RUSS NICLOY: Hello and welcome to Feature Lines

00:02

in Project Explorer.

00:03

My name is Russ Nicloy, Civil Solutions Specialist

00:06

at MACER Technologies.

00:07

In this course, we are looking at Project Explorer for Civil

00:13

you to work with and analyze objects in your design file.

00:16

This session is part 3 of

00:20

Currently we are looking at how to create and edit feature

00:23

lines through Project Explore.

00:25

In this learning path we are at the Create grading design

00:28

course.

00:29

This session will look at creating a grading design

00:31

completely through Project Explore,

00:34

including creating feature lines,

00:36

offsetting feature lines, and defining the proposed surface.

00:42

Now, we are starting this from not having

00:45

the future line in place.

00:47

In fact, I'm going to first open up Project Explorer

00:53

and then I'm going to create a pond on the south end

00:57

of our project here.

00:58

To do this, the first thing I'm going to do

00:60

is first switch over to the feature lines tab,

01:03

I am going to create a site for this called South Pond.

01:13

And then I'm going to filter by that site,

01:16

so that I don't have to look at other feature lines

01:18

while I'm working on this.

01:19

You'll notice there are no feature lines here at all,

01:21

we haven't started that part yet,

01:23

but the site is there is a good filter for as we're

01:26

working through this.

01:27

I'm going to return over to the create feature line dropdown

01:30

and choose create feature lines from objects.

01:34

And then come into the file and select the polyline

01:37

that is at that pond location.

01:42

Then in here I am going to name this Pond Top,

01:50

and then say, OK.

01:54

Then in here of pond top, the feature line style, actually

01:57

I should have set that to the basic feature line.

02:03

I am also going to right click on that feature line

02:06

and choose to set a constant elevation.

02:09

I need this pond top to be at 538.5 and click OK,

02:17

and you'll see that in the grid over here

02:19

it shows that line at that elevation.

02:22

Now, I'm going to return to the create tool

02:24

and choose the create feature line from stepped offset.

02:29

I'll come into the file, I need this to be 20 feet,

02:36

the object set aside to offset two,

02:39

and this is going to be a slope of -4.

02:47

I'm going to go up and start that command again, stepped

02:51

offset.

02:53

This time doing a 10 foot offset to a grade of -2%.

03:03

Now, return up and create from stepped offset in another 20

03:08

feet at a slope of -3 to 1.

03:19

Now, the point of this is that we're going

03:21

to create a surface from this.

03:22

So, now I'm going to return up to the very top

03:25

and change the surface tab, go to the surface tool

03:30

and create a surface.

03:34

I call it Self Pond and then I'm going to add those feature

03:42

lines as brake lines.

03:43

This is where we do have to step outside of Project Explorer,

03:47

I'll go over to the sites, the South pond site,

03:53

right click on the feature lines and add to surface's break line

03:57

and I'll add that to the South pond surface.

04:02

I'm going to add some points into that

04:08

and I do have to edit that surface

04:15

to minimize the flat areas.

04:21

And now that surface represents that pond.

Creating and Editing Feature Lines with Project Explorer– Practice Exercise

Task 1: Create a feature line from Project Explorer

Download the Dataset and Open the practice file, 001-Feature Lines Exercise.dwg.
Add-In ribbon > Project Explorer panel > Launch Project Explorer.
At the top select the Feature Line tab.
Select the second icon to create a site.
Name the site Ditch Grading. Click OK.
Select the first icon drop-down, select Create Feature Line.
Make sure the site is set to Ditch Grading, checkmark the name and change it to North Ditch. Click OK.
Click in the drawing area to make it active. Draw three vertices for a feature line between the north road and the site. Use surface elevation from AIW_Existing_Ground for all three points.

In the Project Explorer, above the profile view select the Compare To: drop-down. Use the small arrow at the bottom of the drop-down to scroll to the select the AIW_Existing_Ground surface.
Use the profile window to confirm the white feature line is matching the green surface profile at the three vertex locations.

Task 2: Edit the feature line in Project Explorer

In Project Explorer in the Feature Line tab change the Filter By: to Ditch Grading.
In the middle window select the North Ditch feature line.
With this feature line row selected press the <CTRL>  key.
In the lower window select the second vertex row. While selected press the <CTRL> key to identify where that vertex is. Notice that a temporary marker appears at the vertex.
At the top of the window change Compare to: West Mineral Ave > West Mineral Ave.
In the lower window select the second vertex row. While selected press the <CTRL> key to identify where that vertex is. Notice the vertex highlights and includes the distance label.
At the top of the window change Compare to: back to the AIW_Existing_Ground surface.
In the middle window right-click on the North Ditch feature line. Choose Set Constant Grade (Hold Start Point…).
Set the Slope/Grade% to -1.0. Click OK.
In the bottom window select the 3rd vertex row. Notice the elevation for that vertex.
Scroll to the right to find the Compared Elevation. Make note of the elevation value.
Scroll back to the vertex Elevation and double-click in that field.
In the Set Value field to the value from the compared elevation.
Task 3: Create a grading surface with feature lines from Project Explorer

In the Project Explorer select the Create Site tool. Name the site Pond Grading.
Change the Filter by: to Pond Grading.
Select the Create Feature Line drop-down and choose Create Feature Lines from Objects.
Select the pond polyline. Make sure the site is Pond Grading, and Name is turned on and changed to Pond Edge, Click OK.

In the Project Explorer middle window right-click on the Pond Edge feature line.
Choose Set Constant Elevation. Set the elevation to 5388.5.
In the Create Feature Lines drop-down select Create Feature Line from Stepped Offset.
Set the offset distance to 20’, select the pond edge feature line, then click inside the pond feature line for the side to grade. Set the offset to Slope of -4.00.
Repeat the Stepped Offset command from Project Explorer with distance of 10’ and Grade of -2%.
Repeat the Stepped Offset command from Project Explorer with distance of 20’ and Slope of -3.00.
In Project Explorer select the Surface tab. Select the Create Surface > Create Surface.
Name the surface South Pond. Click OK.
In the Toolspace > Prospector tab > expand Sites > expand Pond Grading > right-click on the Feature Lines group and choose Add to Surface as Breaklines.
Select the South Pond surface. Click OK.
Make sure the Type is Standard, the Distance is ON and set to 10, and the Mid-ordinate distance is set to .25.
In the Toolspace > Prospector > expand Surfaces > expand South Pond > expand Definition > right-click the Edits and choose Minimize Flat Areas.
Turn ON Filling Gaps and Swapping Edges. Turn OFF Adding Points to Flat Triangle edges and Adding points to flat edges. Click OK.
