In this video, we will define Upchaining core concepts, including projects, items, and bills of materials,
00:12
and describe the main functions you will perform as a tenant administrator.
00:16
This will help you become familiar with the basics of Upchain and how your role plays a part in how your tenant functions.
00:24
So, let's take a look.
00:27
What is Upchain?
00:30
Upchain is a cloud-based product life cycle management system, where you and your team can collaborate seamlessly across the value chain.
00:42
With Upchain, you can easily access critical product data, share it with relevant teams and external stakeholders,
00:50
automate business processes via workflows, and identify any product issues using real time dashboards and reports.
00:59
As a modern flexible PLM solution, Upchain empowers the entire product network to access exactly the information they need,
01:08
exactly when they need it, so that organizations can bring their product vision to life.
01:15
Now, let's take a look at some of the main concepts you will encounter in this and other administrative courses.
01:22
Familiarize yourself with these terms, but don't worry about mastering them just now.
01:27
Many will become clearer as you begin to delve deeper into tenant administration.
01:33
Projects are used to organize and manage the effort and data related to your product's lifecycle within Upchain.
01:41
Projects enable you to track status updates and due dates while having all the information about a product,
01:47
including a project plan, bill of materials, supporting documentation, and change history all in one centralized location.
02:00
A bill of materials lists all of the assemblies, sub-assemblies, parts, and raw materials needed to produce one unit of a finished product.
02:11
Each product has its own bill of materials.
02:15
The BOM displays the indented hierarchical parent-child relationships between the various items within your product structure.
02:30
An item represents one object in your design.
02:34
It is one level in your bill of materials that can be a part, assembly, subassembly, or end item, which is a top-level item with no parent.
02:44
Think of an item like a box.
02:47
It manages all data associated with one object in a product design, including metadata or attributes,
02:56
CAD models and drawings, translations, visualizations, markups, and any other supporting non-CAD documentation.
03:11
Each item in Upchain is assigned a unique item number.
03:15
The item number, once assigned, may not be changed or reused by another item.
03:21
The item number is part of the item data model, which is made up of four parts,
03:27
the item number, the major revision, the minor revision, and the version.
03:36
An item is also described by its attributes, such as material and item type.
03:43
As a tenant administrator, you can create rules that govern the format of the item data model,
03:49
and configure custom item attributes to fully describe the items in your tenant.
03:60
A role determines how and if a user can participate in workflows based on the structure of the workflow and how its tasks are assigned.
04:11
For example, if a workflow assigns a task to the project manager role,
04:16
only those users who hold that role on the project would be assigned to that task.
04:26
A license determines the areas of Upchain that the user has read, write, or no access to,
04:35
including CAD plugins, office plugins, the web application and the various tools found there.
04:41
We'll discuss roles and licenses more in another video.
04:49
A team is a group of users that do not necessarily have the same role, but are involved in the same activities.
04:59
Teams can be added to projects, which subsequently adds all users in that team to the project.
05:06
Teams can also be assigned tasks and included in workflows to perform certain steps.
05:12
This means that any user within that team can complete the assigned task.
05:17
This allows for flexibility in assigning tasks as you are not limited to one role type or one person.
05:23
For more information on user teams, please see our help documentation.
05:33
A workflow is the series of steps and processes that govern the lifecycle of an object in Upchain.
05:41
Workflows are the engine of your product lifecycle.
05:45
They keep all aspects of product development moving by ensuring that the right work is sent to the right person at the right time,
05:53
in the right sequence, and with the right information.
06:02
As the tenant administrator for your organization, you will add and manage the Upchain user base and license allotment across your teams.
06:14
Configure the item numbering rules and custom attributes for your items.
06:20
Select, create and edit the workflows that define your business processes within Upchain and much more.
06:29
This list is not exhaustive as there are many areas that you will eventually work on,
06:35
but it should give you a good idea of the areas you might look into first.
06:43
You should now have a better understanding of some key terms when working with Upchain and your role as a tenant administrator in Upchain.
06:52
Keep going to learn more.

The Business Processes section is where you manage and configure your workflows and business processes,
03:18
that govern the lifecycle of many of the objects and processes within your tenant, to adhere to your organization's established processes.
03:28
The Storage section allows you to connect to a local vault to manage your files and documents in local storage rather than using the cloud.
03:40
The Customers section is where you add and manage your customer list.
03:46
Every project must be connected to a specific customer, and this allows you to search for projects related to specific customers.
03:58
The Users section is where you manage all users and user teams within your organization.
04:05
You'll also find sections to manage your external suppliers and manufacturers.
04:13
And finally, the Divisions section allows you to subdivide your tenant,
04:17
if your organization is spread across different divisions in different locations who may or may not need to collaborate with each other.
04:26
Note that before you can configure storage or divisions, you must reach out to Upchain Support first.
04:36
You should now be able to log into Upchain, open the administration page and briefly describe each section,
