00:03
We have built our existing ground surface using various data sources
00:08
including topographical survey information.
00:12
However,
00:12
some of the information we have used has
00:14
caused some errors in the surface formation.
00:17
A good way to locate surface errors is to display the surface as contours
00:23
where contours are closely packed together.
00:25
It's a good indication of points in the surface with incorrect levels.
00:30
We're now going to edit our existing ground surface
00:33
to fix some of the errors in the surface.
00:36
From the view ribbon tab on the named views panel,
00:40
restore the view area. One using the restore view pull down.
00:44
We can see the contours are very close together around this point in the surface.
00:49
This point was created when we added text entities to the surface.
00:54
This text is a tree label and doesn't represent a height on the ground.
01:00
When we ran the command, move text to elevation.
01:02
Civil 3d couldn't convert this text to A Z value
01:06
and so it remains at zero.
01:09
This has resulted in a zero elevation in our surface.
01:14
We could remove the text entities from the surface,
01:18
delete the tree labels
01:19
and then add the text again.
01:22
But we have an easier way to fix this problem.
01:25
Select the surface by picking on the contours
01:28
and on the surface. Contextual ribbon tab,
01:30
select surface properties
01:35
in the service properties on the definition tab
01:37
expand the build options.
01:41
These are settings that control how a surface is
01:43
built and we can edit them at any time.
01:45
For each individual surface.
01:49
We have a setting to enable us to control the elevation range in a surface.
01:53
Click in the value column of exclude elevations less than
01:57
and set it to yes
01:60
in the elevation less than column set the value to 0.01 ft.
02:06
This will exclude all zero value elevations
02:10
click OK. And rebuild the surface.
02:13
You can see that the surface has been corrected and the contours are displayed
02:17
on the view ribbon tab restore the view area two.
02:22
Here we have a similar problem but this time the elevation text values are wrong
02:27
and are displayed in meters.
02:30
We're going to fix this error by deleting these points from the surface,
02:35
select the surface and from the contextual ribbon
02:37
tab select edit surface and then delete point
02:42
civil 3d displays a message telling us that there
02:45
are no service points displayed for us to select.
02:48
It suggests that we edit the service style and try again
02:52
with the surface still selected right click and choose edit surface style.
02:57
This will take us into the style editor for the style currently in use
03:02
on the display tab edit the plan view direction and turn on points and triangles
03:08
click, OK.
03:11
The surface points and triangles are now displayed
03:16
zoom into the elevation value on the left,
03:20
select the surface and on the ribbon tab,
03:22
choose edit surface, then delete point,
03:27
pick the blue cross for the first surface point to be deleted,
03:32
then pan across and select the second surface point.
03:40
Press her to accept the selection,
03:44
the points are deleted and the surface will update
03:49
from the view ribbon tab,
03:51
restore the view area three
03:55
here. The problem with the surface is a bit more subjective.
03:60
The contours appear to be pulled sharply in
04:02
one direction along this highlighted triangle side.
04:06
We're going to improve the surface by swapping edges.
04:10
Swapping edges is the process of flipping
04:13
the common side between two adjacent triangles.
04:16
The result of this edit can make a dramatic change to the surface,
04:21
select the surface,
04:23
choose edit surface on the surfaced contextual ribbon tab
04:27
and then swap edge,
04:30
pick the triangle side to be swapped and the triangle will update
04:34
press escape to end the command.
04:37
Now restore the view area four.
04:41
Here we have a similar problem but this time we have multiple triangle sides to swap.
04:47
We're going to do this by adding a brake line to the surface.
04:52
Draw a polyline between the two points shown
04:55
without snapping to anything
04:58
drawing close to the points is good enough
05:02
in prospector expand the existing ground surface and expand its definition
05:08
select brake lines right click and add
05:12
the brake line we're going to add is a two D polyline.
05:16
So set the brake line type to proximity,
05:19
a proximity brake line only needs to be close to the surface points.
05:23
The brake line will be applied to the closest points to the line.
05:27
No heights are added to the surface but the brake line will realign the triangles
05:34
click. Ok, then slip the polyline and press enter,
05:39
review the changes to the surface.
05:43
Finally select the surface and go to the surface properties
05:48
on the definition tab of the surface properties.
05:51
The lower half of the dialogue shows the operations list.
05:55
Civil 3d saves a history of all operations and edits made to the surface.
06:01
Here, we can undo and redo operations to the surface
06:07
deselect the a
06:08
contour data operation
06:12
click OK and rebuild the surface.
06:18
You can see that the contour data we added to the surface has now been removed,
06:26
go back to the surface properties and in the operations list
06:29
reselect the a contour data,
06:33
click apply and rebuild the surface.
06:37
The contour data is added back into the surface
06:42
using the operations list. We can remove an operation permanently.
06:46
We can also select operations and using the arrow buttons on the side,
06:50
we can change the order of operations if we need to.
06:54
We've now explored some of the options for editing a surface
