In Revit, a family is a collection of elements that share the same properties, behaviors, and physical similarities.

The three kinds of Revit families are system families, loadable families, and in-place families.

Within a family, you can create multiple types for different sizes, materials, or any other parameter you want to change.

In the case of a door family, for example, you might create different types for each door size,

while keeping the material and hardware the same for each type.

Then, when you switch between the types, you switch between various sizes of doors.

To view an example of door family types, from the Home page,

click New and start a new project using one of the Architectural templates.

Select the Project Browser and expand Families to view all categories of elements

organized by identical use, common parameters, and similar geometry.

Expand the Doors category to view the Single-Flush door family.

Now, expand Single-Flush to view all the door types within that family.

You can create multiple family types for any of your project elements,
